A buffalo and an Indian

I went to a park today. I hunted a spot where Ive been digging some old trash , so I knew there had to be an old coin or two there. I was digging a faint signal and was thinking to myself " These faint signals hardly ever turn out to be a coin." Out pops a 1916 buffalo about 4 to 6 inches deep. It was discriminating out much higher than nickle. Old nickles do that often with the Vaquero. A little later another faint signal. it discd. out about where a screw cap quits. i was thinking Indian head on this one . For some reason Indians disc out earlier than wheats.4 to 6 inches down was the Indian.

I had it set up ay minimum disc. Threshold at 1 oclock and ground balanced neutral.

Man, you really rounded up on some Indians, nice finds

Nice going on the Indian and Buffalo Nickel! Those are really fun to find. The IH looks to be in really good shape.

When you 'thumb' the discrimination, what is it that you don't dig?

If it sounds good I usually dig it , no matter where it disc out at.I usually hit the pinpoint before I thumb it and listen to it also. The two together tells a lot about the target, In the case of these two coins, they sounded good in disc mode. Discriminated out past the tab mark, even the nickle, and sounded mellow in all metal. The best targets have soft edges , like a cats meow , in both modes. Abrupt edges , like a dogs yelp, in either mode is more likely trash but I wont know for sure until I retrieve it .

I dig a lot of foil and iron. I dont mind the iron. It tells a story of the area. I found several old rusty iron pieces yesterday. A hinge,a ring that probably come from a horse bridal, latch mechanism and other stuff . All the trash told me there is still old stuff around so there should be coins. The two coins I found were not that deep and not very loud. im guessing they were on edge . Thats probably why other detectorist missed them. I was using the stock 8x9 coil.

those are two nice finds, 1916 very good,
