I did a spin at high tide for a change and found very little (clad and a 925 toering, whoopee!). I did run into Mark and another hunter who didn't get to hunt because his NiCad battery on his Excal died after less than a year!, Bummer.

(what's with the pirate gear and treasure hunting??
)
This little honey spent her time marching back and forth along the beach the whole time I was hunting, she should get a metal detector and have some fun.

So much for hunting the high tide.
Went for a spin yesterday off of my beach and found a piece of maritime history - a Sounding Lead.
A line with knots tied every fathom is threaded through the hole in the top and a gob of tallow is inserted into the hollow end, then the whole works is tossed ahead of a sailing ship and as the ship comes even with the weight the knots are counted to give the depth of the water in fathoms. The tallow brings up a sample of the bottom so that the type of bottom can be known (sand, gravel, mud, etc.).

This one looks pretty old and I found it very deep in the mangrove mud beneath the beach sand. Pre-sonar obviously but I would guess it to be much older, possibly off of an old wreck.
This hobby is the Best!
