A big "MAMMA" of a Battery for my Explorer XS...

I purchased a 12v4.2AH/20HR sealed rechargeable, non-spillable or Gel cell battery and soldered the positive and negative extension wires, about 1 yard long,to their respective points inside my spare alkaline battery pack, minus the alkaline batteries of course and I hip mounted this battery and I do not have to worry about using those NiMH batteries anymore.
A 600 ma "smart" charger and battery cost me Au$66.00 or about US$33.00 including tax. It has been on for two days and one night with backlight on and everything on full blast and my battery indicator is still all black which means it still has more than a FULL charge. maybe I will get about 50 hours use of a constant supply from one battery charge.
This has also made the Explorer a little bit easier to swing.
Things that make you go..........whoa!!!!!

Certainly to be congragulated for your efforts,
seems like the hobby attracts many who are very inventive. Just visit a competition hunt and you will know what I mean, homeade pouches, diggers,
swing devices are to be found and in many cases
work quite well.
The pack of batteries that come with the Explorer
will surely give you a complete day of hunting..
However long you may stay in the field. When you return whether it be a day trip of all day trip just plug the no memory battery pack in and the next day you are ready to go. Personally feel the
batteries under the armcup help to better balance the unit and are better there than attached to your belt.
Again just my thoughts and for gosh sakes don't take this personally and do what works for you.
Remember fellows were mounting the Sov. under the armcup long before Minelab started putting mounting brackets in this position. Personally if I were a detector manufacturer would indeed vist a competition hunt as many of our guys and gals have super ideas they have incorporated into the hobby and may indeed learn some new tricks myself.

Hello Dan-Pa,
You did hit the nail right on the head,
I did this only because I have a sneaking suspicion, and it is only that, a suspicion, that I may have been unlucky enough to have ended up with a battery pack that actually screwed my Explorer. I will not go to much into it.
I will say, lucky for me that the Explorer power supply circuit cost was resonable to repair and I am very grateful to Minelab for their speedy and quick turn around.
I just don't want the hassles of battery failure at the critical momment and my new power source should overcome this problem. One of the two Nimh packs is now my "back up" power source. The other one was taken apart, it has had it, and we find that there are 8 x 1500 mah x 1.2 volts made in Singapore batteries that eqals 9.6 volts.
There seems to be a regulator circuit that feeds the power from the stock transformer in 15 volts and steps down to supply a 12 volt trckle charge to these batteries. It is bringing them UP to 12 volts. It seems like squeezing blood from a stone but it is common practice, I am told. I have also been told that Nimh batts are crap in the long term.
Maybe some of our mods will spearhead a new version of the Explorer that has evolved from user input and use in the field, not that it needs much more modifying as the Explorer is avery good metal detector. This is what it does best. It detects metal good or bad and that depends on how the individual sees it. I think.
In the meantime, we gotta make good with what we got.
Catch up.

Regards from Algerio. Also I use batteries to the NC however I always have with me the escort of battery alkaline AA.
The batteries NC I leave her under position for 12 / 15 hours maximum, even if it allows to her 48 times of theirs they work only 8 / 10 of job and the alkaline ones work for 15 / 18 hours because the Minelab absorbs a lot of ml.am. you visit my website
You greet to wishes of good hunting and she from Algerio
Hello goodbye
