A beautiful lady walked into my life today!

I hit the old farm again today after 5 hours of digging trash with not even ONE wheat penny to show for it I was tired, irritated and ready to go home. I was digging everything, all non ferrous signals and all large iron that possibly would have been masking a good target.

I was getting ready to give up and decided to take one more trip thru the front yard. And I got a good signal but it read 46 on my x-70 normally that is large iron, I have dug plenty of it believe me. But it was a solid signal so I cut the plug, flipped it back and rechecked then the signal was a solid 44, which is a lot better that is also the signal for a half dollar. I thought to myself this has to be some deep junk again, there is NO coins in this yard, not even wheats., no way it could be a half dollar.

well sure enough 5-6 inches down out walked this beautiful lady a 1916D............a semi key date to make it even sweeter. I think I paid my dues on all the trash I dug out of this place.....lol

Not sure where all the coins at this place are, a total of 7 hours here now and the crotal bell and half is all I can manage from here. Whoever lived here must have been real tight with his money.

:thumbup:Way to go,I can relate, that one liberty half I posted the other day was the only coin I've found on the old homesite I've been hunting. But countless pieces of junk!

She sure is a pretty...

Not only is she beautiful she seems to be walking toward you!!

I'm envious now! I'm sure mine is coming but it seems my neck of the woods has been really picked hard not unless you are very creative. Congratulations

Congrats on the Walker! IMHO one of the prettiest coins ever! Good job and you erned it, Beale.

I have been hunting some old farm homesites with very few coin finds. The sites that have been continuously inhabited from the time of the original homesteader (1870's in my area) until the present time seem to have a few old coins and some modern clad. The ones that were homesteaded and then abandoned after 2 or 3 decades or less -- I usually don't even find one coin there.

We're these farmers really that poor and/or careful with their money or am I missing good coins somehow? Most of the old coins are wheaties, I'm not finding any silver. These places are full of junk, especially all sizes, shapes, and forms of iron. At first I tried discing out iron, but lately I have been hunting in all metal mode and doing a little better. I also started out with the standard coil and thought maybe the "good stuff" was eluding me deeper, so I got bigger coils. Then after finding these internet forums, I thought that target masking was my main problem and got smaller coils and found an IH penny and a neat token, but I've never found one buffalo nickel or mercury dime at any of these old farm sites. I have repeated access to these sites, so I have even tried digging everything and removing all the junk I can thinking it will unmask some good stuff when I go back, but so far it hasn't paid off.
I discussed this with two different area detector dealers and they both said that in their experience old farms are poor pickings and that I need to "get my axx to town where there has been way more people to lose way more coins".

What are some your opinions on these type of sites from some of you who hunt rural areas? I live and work in the country and don't really think I want to go to town and hit the same parks/schools/tot lots that everyone else seems to be hitting, but do I need to just suck it up and go to town?

Hey man very nice find. I am yet to find one of those. Im sure it will give up more. I actualy heard that doing a site in a grid type style, going over the same ground two directions can turn up keepers. Not sure have never tried it myself, maybe I should lol. HH L8R

I'll have to do some research and see if I can find some of the types of sites you have on your list. I know of only a few off-hand that are close by, perhaps some time at the courthouse looking at old maps will turn up a few more.

well I have had some farms produce a ton of old coins, but MOST do not, normally I am lucky to get wheats, and indian or two and sometimes a silver dime. But they normally have cool relics, buckles, suspender clips etc.....I will not turn down any old farm house that I can get permission to hunt, because it just MIGHT be the one that produces good. You never know till you go detect it

Thanks for your input, GoesForever. Maybe instead of investing so much time in each site, perhaps I should only spend a couple of hours at a site, then move on to the next site until I recover an old coin and then really spend a lot of time at that site.
