9v rechargeables

big-ears

New member
What is the best type of rechargeables for the Cibola? So many choices, I'm all ears, Does it work better with some batteries?

I use the Powerex battery in my detector and pin pointer. I also have the powerex Charger. The batterys are great, even after a 4 hour hunt they still have more charge than a brand new regular battery. They are expensive but they have also paid for them selfs in about a months time, ive been using them for 5 months with out problems. I have 2 and am going to buy 2 more, for my spare detector and propointer for when friends come hunting with me. The charger charges 4 batterys at once. Price was 14$ per battery and 30$ for the charger.

I don't use rechargeable batteries as a 9 volt alkaline last a long time. There has been many posts on the forums about rechargeable batteries and one post that I read somewhere stuck in my head and that was that the only Tesoro detector that you had to be careful with using certain rechargeable bateries was the Compadre, I believe that for some reason you shouldn't use some batteries such as the PowereEx brand as they charge to 9.6 volts.

9.6v Powerex batterys are ok there are voltage regulators in the detectors that drop the voltage you could get away with probably 12 volts if it wasn't for the heat the regulator would make dropping the 12volts, but 9.6 is fine. I have used these batterys in multiple detectors with no issues, and they will out last any hunt with one charge. I have done 3 hunts before recharging and still had juice to go. I like them alot, but thats just me. I Accually found out about the powerex battery from somone on this forum. Just wanted to tell what battery works for me.

I know all about voltage regulators and not trying to diagree with you but like I say I read on one of the forums where there was a post made about being careful using a battery that could charge to over 9 volts such as the PowerEx in the Compadre, other rechareables charge to around 8.5 or so. I am about 99.9% the reply about being careful using these "stronger" batteries in the Compadre was from Robert @ Tesoro. When I get more time later tonight I will search the forums and try to find the post.

I can't justify spending that much money for a rechargeable battery and charger when I can stop and pay a buck for something that is going to last a month or two.

Not saying doing so is a bad thing but that's just my opinion.

Yea it was hard to justify the purchase, but i was going through 2 9v batterys a week and I could never find them for a buck i was spending about 6$ for a 2 pack. Thats why i ended up buying the rechargeables and I researched and found that alot of people like the powerex. Im not sure how they would work in the compadre or other detectors but they work great in the Vaquero and the G2. I did see the powerex batterys on line for alot less but when i was at a batterys plus store getting a battery for my harley i saw them and I splurged for them. Glad i did but i should have got them for cheaper online.

Well if you were going thru that many I can see the point in getting them. As far as your shopping habits go as far as looking for deals...lol...well have nuttin to say about that. j/k

Glad it's working out for ya.

Valid point. I bought mine for the Tracker IV which still has the outdated 2-9v batteries. I decided to try them in my Compadre and was fortunate enough to read Allcav's post (Robert) about NOT using the 9.6 v. in the Compadre. Also worked fine in the Tracker. Instead of 20 hr. with head phones, only expect 10-12 or about half the life .Now I don't mind using the Tracker any more-much more economical.

I knew I read that somewhere, guess I am not loosing my mind.

I've said it before and am saying it again - Any body that is having concerns about replacing batteries too often is obviously able to spend more time detecting than I am. I wish battery life was a concern for me. Takes me a long time to use up good quality alkalines.
That said, for the most part I'd say use what YOU like.
