950 vs. 10DD--what's the advantage of each?

Hi,

I'm reading some really positive posts from people who have set the 10DD coil aside in favor of the 950 concentric.

Can someone give me an idea of advantages each one has? My main interest is coinshooting. I find plenty of coins with the DD and the 5.3, but I'm always looking for better depth and better pinpointing to help me find the older silver.

Is it worth buying the 950?

Most people I have heard talking about the 950 say they are getting the detector more stable at hotter settings and better depth with the 950 concentric. I tried it with the one off my DFX and didn't get the same results. I was able to run teh setting hotter, but I had a noticable loss of depth compared to the stock D2 coil. I think like everything else, results will vary depending on soil and other environmental conditions. The only way you will know for sure is to test it for yourself.

It seems that the concentric coils works better in mild to medium mineralized ground and the DD coils work better in the highly mineralized ground, the same results as we experienced with the DFX.

Hi Mike... I do have a 950 coil for my DFX that will work on the V3. You won't be able to use the TX Boost...anyway it's for borrow if you're interested

It's not ALL bad, but it sure can be a pain in the arse in many locations. And it's not just a challenge, but some sites can have some quickly changing ground make-up.

It makes a difference, too, if the site you're hunting has a lot of trash, or just a lot of targets, or if they are sparse. When it's iron type junk, then the problem seems to get worse with a Double-D coil, or does for me. It's compounded when the DD coil is a larger-size as well.

I enjoy coinshooting for modern coins at some sites, but especially for older coins (mainly silver) at older sites I've researched, or just working the same sites that I have been hunting for decades (you never get it all). My favorite coil on an M6 or MXT or V3 is the 5.3 Eclipse because most of the time I am working in trashy sites, or those that have brush, building rubble or other challenges. The 5.3 Eclipse provides very decent depth and responsiveness on coins, especially smaller sizes, and discriminates quite well. I can work in and around trashy handily, especially with the slow-sweep M6 & MXT.

When the target count is less sparse and conditions allow for using a larger coil for a little better coverage and a touch more depth on small coins, I've found the 950 Eclipse to be a very good coil. The stock 10" DD is OK for some applications and good coverage, but when I swapped it for the 950 from the M6 (it was just sitting around anyway while the 6" was mounted ) things improved. I had been working a renovation site for ten months that was loaded with nails and other small iron junk. The most prominent modern trash was the bottle cap. Double-D's have more trouble with bottle caps and iron than do concentric coils and I found the M6's 950 to work quite well.

I had ample coverage, better discrimination, a little better depth, and cleaner signals with the concentric coil. My plan, now, is to get a V-tuned 950 and I'll most likely just use the 950 and 5.3 Eclipse coils for most of my hunting needs.

Thanks to everyone for the replies so far. I seem to find that even when I start out with the DD, I'm taking it off and replacing it with the 5.3 for some reason or another.

On a recent hunt that I've mentioned in some of my other posts, the first day, I used the 5.3 coil and found 62 coins. The second day, I used the DD and found 29 coins and a boatload of bottle caps. The third day, I went back to the 5.3 and found over 70 more coins.
Depth doesn't seem to be a problem--I just need to get on top of the silver!

I just turned in $150 worth of clad that I have found so far this year.....and I'm giving more and more thought to turning it into the 9.5 coil.

You supported the thoughts about certain coils for certain tasks based upon the site environment. I find a LOT more with the 5.3 Eclipse, and I don't have a concern about depth-of-detection.
