950 or Eclipse DD

Calif_quake

New member
I want to make sure I have not been led astray here. I am sure this is a matter of preference but I have been told that of my two coils the 950 and Eclipse DD. The 950 is much better for parks. Does everyone concur with this or should I be using something completely diffferent? In park and grassy areas what does everyone prefer?

Thanks:)

If the park is trashy, the 10"DD separates a bit better than the 950. If it's not trashy I prefer the 950. So I think you got good advise on the 950.

Not to be negative, but the White's DD coil is not that great depthwise in comparison to the 950. Even in mineralized soil. I would stick with the 950 for parks. If you want to buy a coil, get the 5.3 Black Max. Monte, a FindMall guru swears by this little gem. I live in Idaho, mineralization same as CA, I detected CA for years with White's. My 950 does pretty good up here. Alot of user posts I have read were not that impressed with the White's DD coil in mineralized ground. Felt it was a sub-performer for its size/depth capabilities. Plus, all DD coils get fooled easily by bottlecaps vs a concentric coil like the 950.

I'll go the other direction. I have used both here in Utah & find that the 10"dd is not only deeper but easyer to pin point with. I find that it has about 1" more depth than my 6x10 which is my coil of preference.

Q: If you have an M6 or MXT model, what type of detecting do you usually do? What type(s) of sites will you usually hunt?

First, a cut-and-paste from an earlier post you made:

Speaking of this issue I live in the Mojave desert and the place that sold me my machine suggested I use the Eclipse DD locally in these areas of the desert and said it will do you better because of hot rocks. I don't know if he is right and I use the 950 for grass and park areas but I haven't had any issues.
Q: Is this a local dealer?

Q: Would this happen to be a dealer who also gets out metal detecting, or just 'a dealer' like many I know who don't?

Q: So, you have an M6 or MXT with the 950 concentric coil and ... which "Eclipse DD" coil is it? The smaller sub-4X6 DD Shooter Eclipse? The 6X9 DD Eclipse? The round 10" D2 DD for the Eclipse series?

Q: Do you usually ONLY hunt grass and park areas, or do you venture out to old homesteads, ghost towns, encampment sites, or do any serious/i] gold nugget hunting?

Suggestion: If your main detecting activities are going to be centered around coin hunting and working typical grassy lawns, parks, schools or similar coin hunting sites, I would suggesting keeping the 950 concentric mounted on a spare lower rod. Mount it and use it when hunting a beach (in the Mojave ) or a plowed field, or wide-open grassy site that is not heavily targeted.

Suggestion: Buy a good, versatile, smaller-than-stock coil for most hunting needs. While some like the elliptical DD coils, I don't. Yes, they can work, but I have had far greater success with the 6

I've been a bit busy on our website and working on research for some group detecting 'projects' come April, but I try to pop on other good Forums to see what's happening.

I sometimes fall a little behind answering my e-mail, too, because it can get a bit backed-up. However, as you're 'learning' I'd be glad to help, if needed. You're welcome to shoot me an e-mail any time.
