9 volt rechargeable batteries

Arkansas

New member
I own a Vaquero and someone told me that the 9 volt rechargeable batteries are actually 8.5 volts. Does this affect the performance of the machine, as opposed to the normal alkaline 9 volt batteries? Would it make any difference? I have also read where the 9 volts are actually over charged and then drop in voltage as they are used.

If you go to BatteriesPlus they sell a true 9v rechargeable. It will charge to 11v.
It doesn't hurt anything. Your detector has a voltage regulator in it. When the voltage gets to a predetermined level that won't let it function properly, it just shuts off.

the only difference is rechargeables will last shorter, performance is the same

I got some Tenergy 9v rechargables and they kick but

I use 9v Tenergy rechargeables for my pinpointers and my Vaquero. I charge them after each hunt and they have never left me hangin in the field. It's the only way to go unless you don't hunt much or you have stock in Energizer or Duracell. I know I save hundreds if dollars every year using rechargeables . I will not buy an alkaline when I can buy rechargeables and use them over and over for many years. They power your machine as well as any alkaline. I use AA eneloops in my other machines and they are the best I have ever used.

I don't know which pin-pointer you use. I've ruined two Imedion 9.6 volt rechargeable batteries in my Propointer. Somehow, the polarity gets switched and they won't charge.

I'm hesitant to test one of my Tenergy rechargeable batteries in the ProPointer, so I just use them in my detectors and alkaline in my Propointer.

Tabman that's all I have ever used in my propointer and my minelab pro finder 25. I have never had any issues with the Tenergy 9V batteries, and they have never ...not one time...left me hangin. I had used different ones that I bought on Ebay a while back but they didnt last anything like the Tenergy's do.

I'm researching some rechargeables right now but have some things I am looking for in particular. First, hopefully not made in china. Much rather buy American but that may be tough; Japan would be fine though as well because they make a good product. Second, must put out at least a true 9.0 volts, not 8.4 or some other lower number. Third, hoping for something better than 200mah rating on capacity. Lastly, hoping they are not very expensive as in over $10 each.

Anyone have any suggestions based on that criteria please? I've come across the Powerex line that has a true 9.6V 230mah rechargeable made in Japan but it's pricey as I haven't seen them less than about $11 per 9v battery.

My opinion is that the .6 volts is negligible and doesn't necessarily mean improved performance on your machines. I'll have to look at the Tenergy's data sheet and see what they are. I paid 19.95 including shipping for 4 of them.

I run one in my vaquero and in a 8-10 hour hunt, it still has plenty of power to keep hunting...but who hunts for more than 8-10 hours at a clip? I could probably hunt a second day with it...but haven't even tried that yet...just pop em on the charger and they are ready for the next day.

In my pin-pointers, I run em til they stop working. That can be as many as 4-6 hunts before they finally run dry.

That being said...the Tenergy 200 mAh 9Volt has been proven in all of my machines and I wouldn't be without them. I run Eneloop's in the AA flavor and they are the same way...bulletproof. I went through trying all the chinese garbage on ebay before I just bit the bullet and got the good stuff. Hope this helps.

to find the battery you are looking for...9.6 volts and 230mAh at less than $10 and made in the USA...well good luck. You will probably have better luck finding $1 a gallon gas....

Happy Hunting

If you ever decide to use AA rechargeable batteries, get Eneloop. They're the best.

The best reasonable priced charger for them, the La Crosse Technology BC-700 Alpha Power Battery Charger.

A cheap battery charger will cost you more in the long run. Not only does the BC-700 charge batteries, it test them and reconditions as well.

Little John and Tabman,

I already run the Sanyo Enloops for my AA battery needs in my equipment and am pleased so far. I do get some variation in the reading of my battery meter in the AT Pro that will show 75% left then next time I look it will be 50% life but it's likely a something with the machine as I'm sure it was designed to run on standard alkalines. I just recharge them after each hunt that way I have a fresh charge to go detecting on.

Regarding the 9V batteries though, yes I think I'm hoping for too much to find an American made battery but will settle for Japan as I find quality in their products(where the sanyo enloops are made). I was about to pull the trigger on some Tenergy batteries when I noticed they were made in China. Not saying they don't perform well or are not a good battery, just would rather have the Japanese cells. Are the japanese batteries worth a premium over the chinese batteries? I'm not sure and may have to consult my wallet to see if it can cough up the extra scratch to find out.

Thanks for the tips on the charger Tab, it's honestly more charger than I need or am willing to pay for right now unless I find it half the price of new. I am, however, looking at another smart charger for a fraction of the price that will protect my batteries. Again, have to consult the wallet on what can be spent there.

*Edit: Just noticed the La Crosse chargers do not do 9V batteries.
