9" LF coil HELP

Ever since I got my 9" LF coil I have been on a silver drought. I was hunting a picnic area yesterday with 4 other eTrac folks and 11 Merc and Barber dimes came up in about 4 hours of hunting. I ended up with 3 wheaties and a big disappointment. I ended up finding the wheaties by putting on my 6" HF coil.
The park was not too trashy and the silvers where only about 6 to 7" deep. Moderate soil - GB around 24 to 26, AM mode and Pat 1 with either multiple or 4 tones(switched back and forth) sens around 24 or 25 on the LF coil....any suggestions?

I know a few of the silvers where iffy signals on the eTrac and I dug my share of iffy signals yesterday but what do you look/listen for with iffy signals?

Also, I dug over 30 pulltabs that were giving a high- silver pitch. The #'s bounced around a little bit 2 to 4 but that LF seems hotter on pulltabs than it is on silver.

HEEEELLLLLPPP!!!

I use my LF coil most of the time, but I run my sensitivity down around 16. I know that's low by some folks standards, but it works for me.

Haven't really tested it, but I consistently find coins down to 4 or 5 inches.

You have one definite problem and possibly another.

If the E-Tracs are using the stock coil it is a large DD coil versus your concentric. In even moderate trash they are going to clean your clock on masked targets versus the 9 inch concentric. I recall how many naysayers poo-pooed that Pro coil when it was introduced, and mocked that it had taken so long to develop. They are now eating their words with ketchup. Notice what happened when you put on a DD? You started pulling goodies. But you can't compete depth wise with that big Pro coil! If you have one, put on one of the 10.5 inch DD coils, 7.5kHz preferably. Now you won't be so out-gunned.

If you were finding pennies you will find silver! If you don't have a 10.5 inch DD and go back to the same place or a similar one with the same crew, then use the 6 inch HF DD. But here's your strategy, scout around and find the trashiest, thickest, and nastiest plot you can. In that area you will have your best chance against the E-tracs if they are using large coils. Go very slow and vary your sweep angle to peek down through the trash where only that coil can see. A one half inch wide wiggle when you get a hint of a good target is the ticket.

Next issue, convince your partners that their deodorant isn't working! The E-Tracs are spitting out rectangular/square waves which are rich in harmonics. You've brought a source of interference with you in spades! Keep away, far away from them! You are using a VLF detector in the middle of a herd EMI-nu's(new animal I just invented:rofl:)!

These two statements you made bother me:

"The park was not too trashy and the silvers where only about 6 to 7" deep. "

"I know a few of the silvers where iffy signals on the eTrac "

A 6 to 7 inch iffy target on an E-Trac........there's a lesson there somewhere. Coins on edge? Mixed with trash?

And I would air test your coils just to make sure things are not whacky with a coil or the detector.

I have found plenty of those with my XT50 w/stock coil at that depth and have also found a handful with my 6"DD HF coil, something is in that ground or all the coins are on edge...Patience, try it again. Good luck and let us know how you do 2nd time around. HH

I'll stick by what I've been posting for over 3 years. When you properly ground balance your concentric coil, and the number is 28 or lower, you'd be better off using a DD. Too much soil analysis going on for the concentric design to work as well as a DD. I'd agree with Bill...... go back with the 6-inch DD and pull out that silver. I've dug dimes with mine at well over 6-inches. And for the record, ground balancing a concentric coil at 24 - 26 does not represent moderately mineralized soil. Since the GB scale goes from 1 - 90, moderate soil would be closer to 45 than 25. In my opinion, a GB reading of less than 28 is getting in the highly mineralized arena. JMHO HH Randy

Hey hey, I actualy had a LF 9" coil but had little luck in the bad ground here in upstate NY. I Now use the 10.5 MF coil and can hunt anywhere really without issue. I can run it at 28 sens and often find good targets next to trash no prob. I just leave it on now. I myself find running 99 tones and disc out negative numbers works good for trashy sites, just listen to the tones. HH L8R

Thanks for the advice everyone. It seems most of the time when I GB I am around mid to high 20's. Sometimes in the teens and I thought that high 20's was moderate soil. Probably also explains why my better finds have been with my 6" HF DD coil. Maybe it's all the clay we have in our ground.
10.5 MF DD as suggested in this post will probably be my best bet next to the 6" HF DD.
