8x14 DD coil

Has anyone done any 'proper' in ground comparison depth tests between the 6x10 and 8x14 eclipse coils?
I've been thinking of buying one for my MXT but taking into account the cost and additional weight I'm not gonna bother if the extra depth is only an inch or so..

Paul, my soil is far more mineralised than yours, so depths are not comparable, but on targets the size of a decimel 1p I found that the 1400 got 20% more in-ground depth than the 10x6, with a ground coverage increase of 40% per sweep. Iron rejection was excellent. The 1400 weighs 50% more than the 10x6, i.e. 24oz versus 16oz. But that extra weight can be useful for you UK detectorists on flattening stubble. Hope this is helpful; HH jim

That was about what I found to be the case using a DFX as well. For the difference in weight you might consider a stright upper rod rather than the curved piece that is stock. I think it balances a little better. You could also shorten the length of the lower pole by one hole.

The 14 DD is great. It's my standard coil now. It does get more depth than the 950 (along with better coverage). As far as weight goes I don't think it's a problem. I shortened the rod and that helps. Also, the coil doesn't get snagged in brush like the 950. My only negative comment is the difficulty in pinpointing shallow targets. My recommendation for everyone is get one.

I detect solely on beaches - I found my MXT with the standard 'polo' coil too noisy..... will this 14" DD coil make the MXT more stable and give more depth on UK beaches than the std coil ????
