!80 meter info

I have a new Sovereign GT. I bought it new because I was moving to Fla. I have only usednit twice. I just bought a used minelab 180 calibrated meter from Richard at Backwoods detector sales and got a great deal on it but there was no owners manual with it. First off what is the dial on the back for? And where could I get a manual for the meter. Also the meter jumps all over the place and with the meter on I only get about 6 inches on a quarter when air testing it. I live in Fla.now does anyone know of anyone with a GT with a meter in Fla. who would play nurse maid to me with this setup? I sure would appreciate all the help I can get. Would any one willing to help please e-mail me at jackeast2003@yahoo.com. Thanks for listening. Jack

The dial on the back is to calibrate the meter. Just put the detector in auto sensitivity and scan a quarter. Adjust the dial so the quarter scans at 180. I use 179 so that silver scans 180.

The meter will jump more on an air test than a target in the ground. Put the detector in auto to see a little bit better results on the air test. The meter is steadier on buried targets. But it will jump around a little bit. Use the same swing speed. nice and steady.

Yhe VDI chart for target numbers is in this forum. Do a search.

One little note, The meter is used and calibrated in the disc mode, to get the 180 on a new quarter or dime to calibrate you swing over only the coin and try to keep the meter reading and tone as steady as possible to get the 180. The calibration control on the back of the meter is to keep the number to 180 when changing the coil or in some cases when the meter get hot it may varry a number or 2. There is no instruction booklet other than the GT owners manual.

The owners manual you got with your GT has a section in it that tells you how to calibrate and set up you meter.

Be cautious using clad coins for calibration. Not all are created equal...metal content varies slightly which impacts how they read on the meter and are a poor choice for calibration...

Using American quarters or dime should be OK if they are clad, but a penny can make a difference as those from 1982 up are copper coated, the older wheaties will also read lower than the copper one plus the IH pennies will read lower too. Canadian quarters and dimes can make a difference plus some of the foreign coins too.

Rick,

I find quarters down here on the beach that are so corroded you can only tell that they are quarters by their size... (I use them in the local toll booths)... I can say from experience that clads give off inconsistent readings on the meters (Minelab and Sunray)...

Regards,
Dave

Never thought about that I use them in the slot machines at the Indian Casino's
