8 Silver Day - Another First

Ok i went and read the story, did your friend get anything? I had this similiar thing happen to me once, my friend and I were on a good spot and his etrac messed up and I hunted for about 15 minutes and simply could not keep digging stuff when I knew his machine wasnt working, being a good friend I packed up and we left, it wasnt right of me to find everything with him just looking on with a broken detector.

I have been on the other side of that equation before as well, and I knew what it felt like to be the guy with the broken detector and it is horrible and I simply will never do that to a friend again. Back when I had my xterra it shut off in the middle of a hunt and simply would not turn back on.

Just my opinion, but maybe you should have went and gotten him a backup detector then resume hunting the site together. Like i said just my opinion though,
Take it as you will.

I can appreciate your opinion. Here's some other things to consider though. This is Idaho, not Ohio where going to get a backup machine would have taken at least 4 hours round trip to accomplish and the hunt would have been ruined. I did offer to do that though, but he said no. I think part of his problem with unfamiliarity with his machine. Later one (when he did find the Lincoln pennies) he'd decided that his sensitivity was set to high and he was getting EMI interference. I don't know the Teknetics brand of machines, so I wasn't able to help him much, but I did try. At the early stage of our hunt, we knew we'd been lucky to stumble onto that piece of property and didn't know if we'd be able to get back onto it (although it turns out we would have). So there were a number of factors that led to me (us) continuing to hunt. At the end, I offered to split the take with him, but he said no, again. I don't think I took advantage of him. I did express several times that I felt bad about finding coins while he wasn't. I even had him come over when I'd get a good signal to run his coil over the target to try and get his machine working right. When that failed, I did let him dig some of the targets that I found although he would not keep them after they were recovered.

I realize that all these details were left out of the story and were pertinent to forming your opinion. But, I'm no target hog. Let's be clear about that, please.

Nice finds, but why do you not have the story here?

Two reasons: First, I didn't know if it's OK to post the same story on two different sub-forums, but I've now seen that it's common practice for others to do that, so in the future I'll do the same. But, I was excited about my finds and wanted to share the photos with some people I've become friends with that mainly hit the E-trac users sub-forum and don't always look at Today's Finds. Second, I was too lazy to retype the entire story again because it is rather long, so I decided to just include a reference to the place where the story was posted. I felt that MOST people would not have trouble taking the 5 seconds to click between sub-forums versus the 20 or so minutes that it would have taken me to type it again.

I'm still learning the nuances of this site, so cut me a little slack, please. I'm just trying to share my finds, my stories and my love of the hobby. Can you appreciate that?

Interesting story and great finds! I lived in Idaho for a while...Mountain Home. Where abouts are you from?

I never said you were a target hog, and I never said you took advantage of him..... I simply stated my opinion as I have been in his shoes before and yours as well. Another time this happened to me and here is what my friend and I did, maybe if this ever happens again this might work for you.

I would swing till i got a target, dig it then hand the detector off and they would go till they got a target and so on, that way both parties get to enjoy the hunt. To me this is just something a friend would do. I am not judging you, so please do not take it that way. I am merely stating I have been in both positions you and your buddy was in yesterday and it stinks no matter how you look at it. Another suggestion that may help is when you are planning to be so far from home, bring along a backup detector in case something happens. I keep extra everything in my vehicle for those "just in case" moments. Again, don't get too excited as I am not lecturing you or judging you. Just merely giving suggestions and my opinion.

as for posting in two sections, that is no problem, but if you want to transfer your story here, you do not have to re-type it all, just cut and paste it.

OK. Fair enough. Maybe I'm overly sensitive this early in the morning. Ha. I do appreciate your thoughts because you've been doing this much longer than me. I have a spare machine as does my friend. I lined up the spot for us to go, but I can't know how well his equipment works or how well he knows it. I will suggest that he bring along his backup next time, although I expect he's going to have an E-trac as fast as UPS can get it here. I've already offered to speed up his learning curve since others have helped me learn mine.

That WLH is awesome though, isn't it? It was the loudest, purest signal I've ever hit. A 12/46 that was only 2 1/2 inches on the scale. I thought a modern quarter at that depth, but the tone was much different than other quarters I've heard. When that thing fell out of the plug, I was ecstatic. I have it here beside me now and keep picking it up to look at.

Thanks for your input.

odd it was a 12-46 signal as well....every half I can remember digging was 06 or 07-47...it is odd why the bigger silver gives a lower FE number

I just air tested it and it came in as a solid 04-46. When I got the buried signal it was definitely 12-46, but I only made one or two sweeps across it and then pinpointed it for digging. Sometimes I'll get the initial numbers and they will change as I make additional sweeps across it or move around the target. But since there were so many good targets in this yard, I knew I was going to dig it by the tone and only swept it long enough to determine where it was in the ground. I do know that when I glanced at the screen it was on 12-46.

MIght have been some iron flakes within the volume of dirt that drove the Fe down from 04 to 12Fe. Wonder, you said it was 2.5" deep on the depth reading. If iron was the culprit it is likely the actual depth would have been slightly deeper - 3-4". Do you recall the depth?

It was right at 3 inches. I remember being surprised that it was so shallow, but then I thought the area of a half dollar probably kept it from going as deep as the dimes. The dimes and Wheaties were all in the 5 to 7 inch range. I'm sure if I'd let my Etrac "settle" into the target it probably would have shown up as a lower Fe (as it does now with an air test), but after having found several dimes by then and getting such a pure tone, I pinpointed it and dug. Its not uncommon (at least for me) to have my initial numbers on the screen change to something different after I isolate the target and shorten my sweeps over it. I really didn't give it much time to do that.

All of the half dollars I have dug have been 1 to 5 FE and 46-47 CO. Occasionally a 12 FE number will pop up. The last two Walkers I dug I knew were halves before I unholstered my digger because of the repeatable low FE and 46-47 CO numbers.

I do agree that halves are wonderful to see in the hole. I was fortunate last year also to get my coil over 4 Walkers and 2 Franklins, so I have started paying closer attention when I get those numbers.

I always carry two of everything so I don't get stuck in the field (now I can actually carry two ETracs since I traded for one). This has helped both me and my friends out (one of my digging buddies borrowed my backup propointer on Saturday when his acted up).

Happy hunting and I hope your ETrac keeps sniffing out the silver!

My friend has detected longer than I have, but not as much (if that makes sense), Since I'm retired, I go out almost every day....at least 3 or 4 times a week. I started with a White's DFX in March of last year. I used it all of last year and bought my E-trac in November. I practiced with it all through the winter and now that practice is paying off. My friend has a White's Spectrum, but recently, VERY recently, bought a Teknetics T2. After talking with him some more, he has not learned to use his new machine. In fact, it's my opinion that his lack of knowledge on the machine might have been more the problem than the machine itself. He didn't have the manual with us and I'm not familiar with that brand of detector, so I wasn't much help. I do take enough gear for backups for myself, but I didn't take my White's on this trip. I have two Garrett ProPointers and they were both in the truck (he ended up using one of those because the "package" pinpointer he got with his Teknetics was junk). We also shared my Lesche ball-handled shovel because all he has is a little trowel.

After seeing my gear and understanding I'm very seriously addicted to this hobby and have some good equipment I think he realizes he needs to upgrade some of his gear and get dedicated to mastering the use of it. Although I did feel bad about his misfortune, I don't think there's much else I could have done to help him. If failing to leave a site that was that rich in silver because my friend was having difficulties makes me a bad friend, I'm okay being in that category. Not knowing if we'd be able to get back onto that site again in the future and being a fair distance from home were the primary factors in the decision I made to continue with the hunt. In the end, he did find a valuable good luck charm that, strictly monetarily speaking, is worth more than the silver I found.

I spent all day yesterday knocking on doors to get permission to detect. So, my coffee is finished and I'm off! Good luck to others today and in the future.

Nice looking silver! A couple of weeks ago I dug a Franklin and it came in at 12-46/47. It sounded more robust than a quarter signal though.
