8 inch mono on the way!

Finally gathered the courage to order the 8 inch mono for water hunting. Hopefully a good choice! Cant wait for the courier. The ATX has been awesome so far - another gold last night in the water.

Once I get it - I will write a review for the forum - I have many hours now on the ATX with the standard coil, and could really not find any info on the 8 inch coil as it pertains to beach hunting and gold rings :) Certainly it will be lighter, and hopefully won't 'flop around' - lets hope it is a little deeper?

Got my 8" coil this week, Although haven't took it out did run some back yard air test compared with the stock DD and an Infinium 5" X 10" DD coil.

The 8" mono coil gets great depth for it's size, Sensitivity is good and should be a good coil for ocean or fresh water. Did loose the iron check feature though but it's waterproof that is what I'm needing for fresh water, The 8" mono may do well and get good depth on ocean wet sand because now it can be run with higher sensitivity so maybe this may be the coil of choice for those who hunt ocean wet sand?

Think I'm going to like this coil for water, And keep the Garrett Infinium 5" X 10" DD for land use it's too hard to replace as a land coil it's that good!

does it air test similar or greater than the stock coil - still waiting (impatiently) for mine! few more days.....:goodnight:

On both a nickel and penny, The 8" coil air tested about an inch less. But out in the field the 8" may have an advantage in mineralized ground as the coil see's less ground, So it may gain back this slight loss with enabling to increase sens up a bit.

Time will tell, Look at the 8" coil as another tool for certain types of hunting. For me, Already know it's going to be used for fresh water be much easier to swing in the water.

Glad to hear that you like the 5x10 dd. Mine just arrived today. A quick air test with small gold ring was about 1 inch less than my 12x14 dd coil and about 2" less with men's gold wedding band. That was at a setting of 10 on sensitivity. My problem with the big coil has been locating targets in the water. Leaving lots behind. I did dig a huge hole last week and pulled my first good ring with my newly acquired ATX and it was deep. It was a large men's silver ring. Totally black. Looks to have been there a long time. I am going to waterproof the 5x10. That should make a big difference in the water. Got it used for $80. Just can't justify the 8" mono at $450 for now. I'm a lot better at finding targets with my mono on my seahunter. These DD coils are new to me.

I just took the ATX to a swimming hole recently (first time out with the ATX), and had trouble locating several of the targets in the water, and seemed to dig endless holes on some targets to no avail. Does anyone know why this is, and will a smaller coil help with this issue?

benefit and negative of the ATX at he same time - for me it is typically 'hair pins' / bobby pins - slipping through the scoop or very small targets through the scoop holes. You may also be digging VERY deep iron, and not reaching it.
