8 hrs now on the SE

Today, I had 2 hrs. and 40 digs. Some iffy signals repeating in 2 or 3 directions yielded 18 coins and 22 junk (1 had 2 pennies in the hole). Did find a relic in there as well, some sort of brass bedpost. I am working a very old park. I am certain it has been there for over 100 years and this has been a popular area sime the 1600's situated next to the hudson river in NY in the 1st capital of NYS. There has to be some oldies in there still. Not sure why I have yet to find that deep signal that repeats in multiple directions, but wish i would.

What does it mean when u hit a good signal and the pinpoint changes the crosshair position to undesirable?

When you have a good signal, dig, then check the hole and get a null, is this always iron?

Why is it that sometimes I believe a signal is 7 " and it is only 3"?

Should i plan on staying this course for the 1st 50 hours of use? 20? 100?

I appreciate all the feedback and all your help Bryce.

peace

Aaron....deep repeating signals are a rarity here in my parks because everything has been pounded to death...but there are still good ones to be had.
Buddy...18 coins with 22 junk items is not a bad hunt at all. In fact I'd say you did very well...especially since you said you chased some "iffy's":clapping:

I use the SE pinpoint feature as the final decision maker on whether or not to dig...because unlike the EX II and the XS...it ID's in all metal pinpoint.
If that cursor moves over to the iron side when I pinpoint...I walk on.

Not always...but most of the time. If you have the sunray probe...a quick check of the hole will give you the answer. There could be a coin hiding with the iron...or next to it.

Sometimes the size of the target throws off the depth reading...at least for me.The targets that don't end up being coins for me...usually don't have accurate depth readings.

I would honestly advise 25 to 50 hours or so like this...but that can vary immensely depending on how quick things "click" for you.
You might feel ready after 20 or so. That's all up to you/. You'll know if you've tried too much too quick because you'll start l@@king for a tree to wrap it around:biggrin:

Thanks bryce. You know you don't look old enough to have been detecting for 35 years....good water down there?

If there are not so many deep repeaters in your parks, is it fair to assume that you don't dig many signals?

So, knowing there are differences between the XS and the SE, i was thinking about hooking up a splitter to my friends machine and listening in on his tones a while. Would you recommend this strategy or is the difference with his advanced settings and tones too much? Should i just run my machine over his desirable signals?

He's been hunting with that machine for ~10 years although minelab sent him a new SE recently. He doesn't feel comfortable enough with it to produce the same results yet. He's not a braggart but I know he found an 1870 seated half recently.Unfortunatley he scratched it with his digger. Now i am not the type to believe everything i hear, but another reputable friend told me he bought over 5k worth of coins from him this year. He told me he found 3 cobbs and over 27 colonials at virgin 1 site!

Just got a bad feelin when looking at my manual. it says press and hold the power for 2 seconds to pull up the factory presets. i have not done this, i just turn it on by pressingthe power. Being that i bought it used, i now think i have been hunting with different settings. Oh boy.

I started as a youngin' at 11 years old. 35 years later...and I'm still swingin' it.:bouncy:

Honestly....I guess I don't dig many signals that repeat...cause I don't have many of them...lol.

Seriously though...most of the ones I do dig are sweet one way's..or okay 2 ways Repeaters are rare.

What he has his settings at can completely change what you are used to hearing through your SE. Not because he has a different machine...but if his variability is one notch higher than yours is...a silver dime to him...could sound like a wheatie to you.

I personally wouldn't do it yet...but I would after you have some more time on the SE...and understand what each setting difference he has...and how it makes the sounds you hear different.

If your variability is at 8 and mine is at 10....when I run my machine over what I feel is a silver dime...it would probably sound like a wheatie to me through your machine.

It truthfully takes some time to understand exactly what you're dealing with when you go changing certain settings.

I would recommend some more time on the SE to familiarize yourself with it more before listening to what an advanced hunter is hearing.

Again though...after some more time on it...I would say it could very beneficial...but only after you have better learned the language the SE speaks.

I would give yourself a few more hours...then if you feel you have a decent basic knowledge of the many different sounds that can be heard...go ahead and listen to what an experienced user hears.

This is all just my opinion...but you have been making good progress fairly fast...so you be the judge.
