8" FBS Coil

Just wondering if this is a decent all around coil for the Explorer. Does it significantly decrease the weight or balance the machine a little better over the stock 10.5" coil?

It's a great coil and while it is a little lighter than stock...I don't think I would call it significant.

It does a nice job at sites with a little higher trash content..and it gets good depth.

I had a ML 8" and didn't feel like it did much for me in terms of separation over the stock coil and it didn't feel any lighter than the stock. I have heard the SR is lighter so that might be a consideration. You may want to consider the 5" or 6" coils, my exc.5" is light and works real well in trashy areas.
Now this is only my opinion so take it as such.

Well I had already bought the coil and got it yesterday. Was suprised as it is only 7.25" not 8", sort of misleading. It is pretty heavy for the size. Will try it out this weekend weather permitting. Should be slightly easier to pinpoint with.

Hi Lovepulltabs,

Just got a 8"FBS coil today and went out for a little while.
It is a snap to pinpoint, and really impressed me,it seems so small compared to my 11" Pro.

I bought it for real trashy areas and the woods ( between trees & on trails ).
Really good for the nooks and crannies.

I think you'll like it Gary, wouldn't want to do i field with it, but in the right place it should be a killer.

Good Luck,
Ron

Hi Ron, thanks for the advice. I'm going to try it out in the woods here this weekend. There's an old building foundation there, well not all that old maybe late '50's . I've had trouble there before as I believe the structure burned down and there was an aluminum roof on the building and there are bits of melted aluminum everywhere and they sound off as good targets on machines I've brought back there before, sort of frustrating. I haven't tried the Explorer at this site before but will give it a go Saturday. Anyone have any advice how to discriminate out the burned up aluminum pieces without losing copper or silver coins with the Explorer?

Thanks,
Gary

You should be about to use a SMALL pattern LEARN. The problem is they come in all sizes... but i think show up as 7-27 digital a good many times... the key being 27 cond. That small pattern should break it up enough youd know what you were dealing with.

LPT, I think the FBS 8 inch coil is a good strategy.A lot of people including myself aren't big fans of the 8 inch, after a while 10.5 coil takes its toll on long hunts and changed my opinion to give the smaller coil a try..I just bought a Sunray X8 and hope to have better separation, balance and weight.I have heard this coil is lame for depth until you raise the gain to 7+.The mounting ears are more center with the X8 and less edge hot spots, which will help with swallow pinpointing. The Sunray X8 is used on you tube by a lot of Explorer users and noticed the depth seemed to be good.Anyway I hope this 8 inch coil will be a solution to the problems associated with the heavy 10.5 coil.
