Now, regardless of the make and model, there can always be some subtle differences from coil-to- coil, or from detector- to-detector, but for open areas where 'general searching' is what I want to do and have coverage while dealing with low-to-moderate trash, the 8" EXcelerator is my pick.
Sites that have a little more trash have been a problem because it is hard to get
coverage while still picking between litter. I have compared the 5" EXcelerator against several (3 or 4) of the 3x6 'Shooter' coils from White's and in every case the 5" outperformed them in my ground and applications.
I'll be working the 4x7 DD a lot in comparison these coming weeks in search of a 'blended-handling' coil to get a little better depth yet deal with higher trash levels. Specifically, I'll work it in some of my encampment and ghost town applications, but for urban hunting, there are four parks with a very high count of screwcaps thanks to the transients (formerly known before politically correct times as Bums and Wine-O's).
I have hunted one park in particular with several friends who use either Minelab Explorers or White's MXT's. The Minelab guys with DD coils have usually done better than most of the MXT users, regardless of which
factory-made coil they used. I did fairly well with the 10" open-design EXcelerator, but the 8" solid DD EXcelerator operated smoother (at +3 gain I always hunt at) than any other coil I used there over 5" and helped pick silvers out of the high-conductive trash.
Most of the coils used by any brand with any success have been 8" or less in diameter due to the dense litter. I have transitioned to the 4" coil for 'full-time' use on my IDX Pro for working iron infested, high trash locations or very close to metal pipes, etc., so it is set up and always at the ready. The 8" EXcelerator DD has been the coil I have kept mounted up most of the time since testing it. It is an exceptional coil. Too bad it doesn't come STANDARD on the MXT!
