8" coils

For those of you who have used a good many of them ..... which do you think is the Hottest... and of course water proof? Im looking for a good 8" beach coil for working the water line. Ive got 2 Xcals both with 10" coils, if i find i like it i might consider switching one to an 8". With a Sov having various coils and the Xcal.... if i add an 8" to an Xcal this could make it harder to decide which to grab for the beach. Ive got a Jeep..... i cant carry 2 machines and expect to come home with both.

Hi Dew, well i've used them all and the best one i found was the horseshoe coil that came on the old excal, Les is useing one now and as you can see he does real good, so if you can get one that's the way to go, HH

I agree it can be a hot coil.... only problem with those coils like Les's they get out of tune... some good some bad. Not many running around either. Which would you say was your second choice and what kind of depth would you say they get on a dime?

I use both the 10 inch and the 800 coil. They are both great coils. I beach hunt 90 percent of the time. I use a sov gt a d just picked up a wot coil.

Nomad.... do you have an 8" for the Sov that you've tried? What are there about four 8" ones we can use? I know Sun Ray, kellyco, and ML make um. The 800 ..... isnt the coil only like 7 1/4 inches? what are these others.... true 8's?

Dew,I have used all the 8 inch coils for the Sovereign ,S8,BBS 800,Tornado 800,Coinsearch 8 inch,Joey coil and a Kellyco 8 inch concentric. The Tornado 800 is the best of the bunch, stable, great depth, fast sweep speed, hits hard on targets, and light. The down side hard to find one at a cheap price.Good Luck Ron

I use the Tornado 800. I bought it about two years Ago after reading post from Ron from Mich. it is a great coil never used anything but the 8 @ 10 inch Tornado on my Sov GT.

I forgot to add that it is easier to pinpoint with the 800.

Here are the three waterproof ones available that are DD coils. The sunray S8 is the lightest of the bunch and is a full 8". The Tornado and BBS are both 7.25".
This BBS coil pictured is the one I bought used(cheap) that was from an Excal and I put a Sov connector on it. They are all waterproof.
Ive tested them all against gold I have and they all stack up equal in picking up gold, small to large. They all seperate side by side equally also.
ALso the thickness on them is very close so in the water they all feel about the same . Knowing what I now know about them if I didnt have any of them and wanted to buy one I would simply buy the one in the best shape for the best price I could get and not have a second thought on it.

that SunRay looks heavier.... am i right? What i do like is its a full 8". Ron.... you never mentioned the SR, have you used it as well? I want to use it along shore ledges looking for chains.

Dew,I listed the Sunray as the S8 probably better if I just said Sunray.I've used and owned three different Sunray 8 inch coils on my Sovereigns. This coil is very well made IMHO looks much better than the T800.I don't have any exact weight figures but did notice the Sunray felt heavier. The Sunray is a true eight inch coil, very stable but didn't respond as quick or deep when I used this coil especially for dime size targets.I did a post few years ago with the S8 and T800 on air test paired against one another the T800 may have had an inch advantage on the air test ,I'm not an avid believer of air test. The 800 pound guerrilla in the room is how well these coils will work for 50 cent pieces,(which should be researched more)this is the Sovereign's weak area,a tendency to null or stall for these larger coins even near the surface.I've found for halves the Sovereign can null before a good reading is achieved, but one can over come with experience. If I had just one choice the Tornado 800 would be it.Not everyone is going to agree with this choice, but this is what I found from my experience with this coil.HH Ron

Odd you should mention its response on larger high conductive coins. I noticed the Xcal II in disc can not hear a quarter that PP picks up deep. I didnt notice this thou with the Blue 1000. How about sensitivity to small gold Ron? I picked up a 1.1 gram 10K yesterday with the 13" at about 5 inches. For my hunting..... on the beach, im looking for sensitivty to gold more than depth persa.

I posted pics a few months back of each of these coils sitting on a scale. The Sunray weighs in the lightest but I agree with Ron the Tornado has the lightest feel to it. They are all so close Dew.
One thing I have to say in favor of the Sunray, Ive never read about any coil cable issues with them but there has been some cable housing splitting with the tornado coils.Ive never personally had any issues with the Minelab coil cables on any of their coils. I used to really like the flexible grey cables that came on the coinsearch coils. They didnt have the memory as bad as the newer black cables.
ALso never have seen any cable issues with the Coiltek coils.

Might be hard to understand how i can like MLs machines so much, yes not care much for ML. The last two machines ive bought have been used with the hopes the bugs were out of them.... i just find it hard to give ML any of my money until some things change. So.... ill take a careful look at some of the after market coils.

I will always have an 8" excal and 8" coils on the ready for the Sov!
