8"Coil and X1

Several people have mentioned I should have these two accessories to do better especially to pinpoint. Are they Coiltec? Is Coiltec the best coil, are these sold by minelab, what is the best source and exactly what should I have. I don't think the SX is really very good for pinpointing, and I am still digging some empty holes with the coin in the sidewall yet the SX actually pinpoints in the exact center. Another question, I dug a lot of coins today, still getting surface stuff, just can't seem to recognize the deeper stuff right now I am using IM at -6, sens 26, auto, and just can't recognize the deeper coins, I know they are there because I have dug a few, today I dug 5 quarters, 7 dimes, and 10 pennies(all newer stuff) in about 2 hours, most of the time was spent trying to pinpoint and find the coin, This field is absolutely full of coins . Also dug two motel keys, one bracelet, one ring and a watch (but the field is about 70 years old so I KNOW there are deeper older coins. Another thing the newer pennies have a neat little sound and an exact cross hair SOMETIMES, I really don't want to dig them yet sometimes they sound just like a quarter and have the crosshair in the upper right just like a quarter, but when I dig I get a newer penny, What is going on? Any help appreciated.

Ken,
The X1 and X8 are manufactured by Suray, I have attached their web site link below. From all I have read they make an awesome combo in finding silver. I just ordered mine, I'll give you feed back as I begin using them.
In regards to pennies that equal quarters, I have found that on most clad quarters, shallow ones the cursor will make an E in the upper right corner. That is to say the the right side of cursor will push off of screen and look like an E. While a penny will be a square in the right corner with literally a hair width between cursor and corner. This happens most of the times remember, if two or three coins are in hole this is skewed a bit.
I regards with old deeper ones, I have been there, matter of fact I am there now. I have slowed down, sped up, adjusted variability, hunted in Iron Mask. For me, I think I tinkered too much, too soon. One I got the hang of a decent program if you will, I moved on. Well as I changed so did the learning curve again. I had learned sounds in Discrim , now in IM the basic theory is same but sounds are different, especially in IM.
My point is for me I am gonna try to stay with basic setting till I know them frontwards, backwards etc. The best I can tell the following should work in almost all settings till I get a better grip
IM at -6 to -8
Variability 10
Sens Man 20 to 26
Thresh 7
deep only in low trash
fast only in trash
sounds Conductive
I get frustratedcomin home skunked, (no silver) but it will be there tomorrow, have confidence in what you are doing, you are asking great questions, slow down and enjoy the hobby as you have been.
Hope this helps good luck
Joe

Thanks, that helps a lot, did find one liberty dime 1942s in excellent condition, Just have to get the deep stuff, I am going really slow, like walking in slow motion, but deep signals still elude me, I am sure that will come with time and practice, thanks again, Ken

I am puzzled by your comments that sounds are different in IM. I just rechecked to be sure, but on my machine, coins sound EXACTLY the same in IM as in any of my discrimination patterns. You stated the necessity to relearn sounds in IM. Maybe I am missing something. To be sure, you'll get a lot more signals in IM, but targets sound the same to me in either mode. Maybe I need to get a set of new ears.

Thom,
Good Morning. Just checking the beach forcast for today and saw your message. You are correct coins sound the same, but I guess what has put me in the tail spin is the increase in signals as you mentioned. I have found more rusty nails then coins over past weeks. Some is by my doing, I have been diggin almost everything. with nails I do circle the target, if I get a repeat signal in any direction I dig. I have had advice from Jim and others here how to tell a nail, but I guess Im slow. I also changed gain and variability, I thought this would make it easier to differentiate sounds, it did not at this point for me. I have put gain back at preset and just bumped variability up from 8 to 10.
Any other suggestions would be appreciated, I am sorry for confusion
Joe

Nails give a low tone in ferrous audio, while coins still give the sweet high tone.

Hi Joe,
More and more people keep talking about the ferrous mode. Returned yesterday from Coin Beach in Delaware where I dug 4 or 5 nails, all greater than 10" - several of the holes were amazing. I think the next time I go to the beach and start find those old nails, I am going to play around with the ferrous tone mode. I have seen people talk about the nails at the beach before. Do you suppose they are from shipwrecks?
