8" BBS coil

I just bought an 8" coil and have been trying it out. There are things i like and dislike. Mostly the size. I did a classified to see if i could trade it for a SunRay or SEF 8". My observations so far is .... if the gold is .4 grams or larger then the standard coil is going to trump this small coil for depth. But i did some testing on some small chains and earrings. For the most part the 8" did a little betterand got me about 1/2". That may well change even more once you throw in black sand, salt water and a salt water setting like on an Xcal. The larger coils has to process more material. On the dry sand.... the small coil nulled more than say my 13".... it was like the 13" didnt even know the tiny iron was there. Id say much like a CZ20 does when you turn up the GB... it picks up really tiny iron. You can hear most of the gum wrapper with the 8". So for me the ML coil might be a nitch coil for trashy areas or when i believe ive gotten the bigger stuff. Hard choice..... you MIGHT pick up a chain that the large coil dont..... or go with the large coil and you WILL pick up a heavy deeper ring and cover more of the beach. I noticed they can really be a work out too having to swing more.... it does teach you coil control thou. Anyone wanting to trade PM me.

Dew on land I've compared the BBS 800 and the Tornado 800.The Tornado performed better but the BBS coil was close.I got great performance out of both of these 7 1/4" coils got excellent depth and great separation.Another advantage with this smaller coil the sensitivity could be adjusted to max and the sweep speed could be increased without knuling or missing a target. The very first BBS coils did suffer performance problems, which this may be the older coil, one way to tell if you have one of these coils Minelab pinned five wires instead of four.Interesting results and appreciate your feedback on this coil. Thanks Ron

In a park or old home site setting i agree Ron. Im not knocking the coil for performance..... but on a beach its like swinging a 2" coil in a park with very few targets. Lot of swinging If you arent willing to WORK an area properly and dont concern yourself with time. Yes i could run the coil very HOT..... i was surprised how much nulling it did compared to my 13" coil. I checked those nulls and they were iron so it was doint its job. You really have to have some idea of what to expect in your location then test from there.

Id love to get my hands on a 6X8 SEF..... i know they made them for the Explorer, did they make them for the Sov? Anyone has one they would like trade with me let me know...... id pay your shipping even. This is a good coil Ron no problem with that and something i wanted to complete my Sov package should i ever sell it. 13", standard, 8 and 5..... what every hunter wants but might not need.

Hi Dew
Don't know why you are in such a big hurry to get rid of your 800. I fell that it's a good addition to your kit--just ordered one on my Blue Tubes. MGM uses this set up exclusivley and finds a ton of small stuff with it--especially chains and broken peices. He likes the audio and the reduced suceptability to interference. As Ron says, you can turn it up a lot higher and IMHO this is the Excal's Achilles heel--the sensitivity is not all usable. I've never liked the tiny physical size of this coil except for land but I think that if you are working decent ground such as the bottom of gullies as I do, coverage is not the central idea. Hey, anyone had a chance to look over this new Coiltek 8 X 12"? That looks pretty interesting for the Excal.

I started with the Sovereigns with the XS which had the 8 inch coinsearch coil on it and when the XS2 came out it came with the 10 inch BBS coil and sold my XS to a Friend of mine that seen what it could do. Now with the 10 inch BBS coil on the XS2 I was not getting the finds like I did with the 8 inch coil, even compared signals and when my Friend with the 8 inch coinsearch coil got a signals I couldn't I knew something was not right. I found a used 8 inch coinsearch and put it on to see if that would make a difference and it worked great. Over the years I have bought a few Sovereigns and resold them and got to try different coils and never did like those with the 10 inch BBS coils, but liked the S12 of Sun Rays for a big coil. Liked the Sun Ray S-8 as it seem like it had a tighter tighter pattern and could see good items close to trash better as the signals were not as big with this coil, but we felt it went deeper then the 8 inch coinsearch. Now with the 8 inch BBS coil I have used it is a good coil too, but preferred the 8 inch coinsearch or the S-8 coil for the small coil, but now if used in water the coinsearch can not be used so then it would be the 8 inch BBS coil or the S-8.
Now when the Elite and the GT came out it came with the 10 inch Tornado coil and felt I may have to get a 8 inch Tornado coil as I liked the 8 inch coils, but found out the 10 inch Tornado coil worked just great for me. I bought a used 8 inch Tornado from Neil and never got a chance to use it to see how it would work for me before someone needed one and I gave it up being I have my 8 inch coinsearch and don't water hunt.
Now I added a 10X12 SEF coil to my collection of coils, but haven't used it enough to get a good opinion on it yet, been too busy trying to learn and CTX and think I will go back to my Sovereign GT as it is so simple to use and a lot more fun to use.

Thanks guys. Clive, im not looking to get rid of the 8", id just like to have one thats a true 8" to work with IN THE WATER. Neil was selling off some of his coils and i grabbed up an 8 and 10". It also completes my coils for the Sov..... cant beat these machines on the beach here in Fl. I cant really say i get a lot of EMI here except on very windy days from power lines on one beach. Right now unless some of the clean sand moves i can run pretty high sensitivity on the 10" on one of my Blues. Have no idea why.

Clive Gary Storm has a video out on his new underwater machine with a 12" coil to be out in the spring. He did a comparison to an Xcal, CZ and his machine. You dont see many salt water machines with a 12" coil that picks up the chain he runs across it. Not many of us dragging those chains out.
