7th, 8th, and 9th of July days at the beaches....:)

Well, I'm new to this forum. Thanks Norm, for letting me know about it. I'm also on Treasurenet.com (under the same name).

Hubby and I have been detecting over a year now. We just did a hunt up at Pipsico Boy Scout Reservation during Memorial Day weekend. We had our hunt featured in the Smithfield Times (June 23rd issue?). I found my very first colonial button and of the 5 found, mine was the only one with writting on it. To see pics of our hunt, you may visit my webshots.com/user/famleeroots site and see what we found. Day 3 shows all the finds. We did, however, have to turn in our finds, but we are now the "official detectors" of Pipsico for BSA Tidewater and we will be doing another hunt in Oct/Nov of this year. A few of us are researching an area of the reservation of where an old general store, post office, brothel and a few other buildings were to be located along the James. With so much overgrowth, the Fall will be a better time to hunt this area. If anyone interested in going to the next hunt, I'll keep ya'll posted (as well on Treasurenet.com).

Hit the beach on the 7th, 8th and 9th of July. (Sorry, no pics right now...just plain tuckered out and lazy at the moment ;)...but if anyone hasn't seen CLAD before .. let me know, I'll post pics LOL)

On the 7th, hit Croatan Beach with my boys. Let them play in the water, walked to Rudee Inlet and watched all those "boys" out there fishing away..getting crocker and throwing back the speckled flounder!

My boys and I arrived around 7:45 am (no fee for parking before 10am!). Found a key, 21 pennies, 4 nickels, 10 dimes, 7 quarters ($3.16 total) and a child's costume ring (has 3 turtles on it...looks like a mood ring of sort). We left the beach about 1:30 pm.

On the 8th, my youngest boy and I hit Croatan Beach again from about 4pm to 8pm. I left with 10 pennies, 1 nickel, 3 dimes, 4 quarters ($1.45). Parking was only a dollar (cause I'm a Va Beach resident). Found bobby pins out the ying yang...my goodness, I could resell these I think!! Found some kind of Luggage Tag (or maybe a tag for a surfboard on the surfer side of the bach)...Has NIKE on it and a signature on the back. Also found a 2005 Canadian Quarter and a 1957 G Deutsche Mark. The German coin I found clear up near the dunes. I wonder if it wasn't sucked up when they refurbished the beach with sand...it was about 6 inches down and I almost did not dig it, was not a coin signal I am use to. Researched it and it's made of Cupro-Nickel and was in circulation from 1950 to 2001. It replaced the Reichsmark in 1948. It was the offical currency for West Germany. 1 Deutsche Mark = 100 Pfennings. Oh, found (visible on the ground :))..a pacifier.

Then we left Croatan and went to the Oceanfront, around 20th-22nd Streets. This is where I met "Mr. Beaver", Norm and a another guy from Pennsylvania. Found 35 pennies, 6 nickels, 10 dimes, 16 quarters ($5.65) (Parking was a 1.00 after 5pm for Va Beach residents). Also found a 2000 Chuck E. Cheese token. We were there from about 8:30 pm to 11:30 pm (my son was plumb tuckered out, but what a trooper he was!!! He found 48 cents in one hole and I found 1.50 in quarters in another!)

We headed back to Croatan on the 9th about 4 pm-7pm (I was getting tired from the heat and the up and down of digging, etc...so I didn't find much...rested more than detected LOL). Found 7 pennies, 1 nickel, 4 dimes, 6 quarters ($2.02). Parking was a 1.00. Also found a cigerette lighter (those mini bic ones with a silver holder.) I have not taken out the bic yet...but that holder is pretty heavy. That's a keeper for me, won't give it to hubby, it's mine...he will loose it and I don't feel like finding it again!!! LOL.

After that, stopped at the oceanfront again. Before hitting the beach, we watched a magic show on 20th street...guy was pretty good, but took away from my detecting sunlight. But my son was happy, so I was happy! :) Only detected about an hour on the beach and found 20 pennies, 1 nickel, 7 dimes, 2 quarters ($1.45). Well, actually, I found 3 quarters, but there was this family out there from Pennsylvania (those PA folks sure do love our beach!)...anyways, Eon, their son, was given a detector for Christmas, never saw one like it...looked space aged, something Capt Kirk may have used! But he was learning it and I put a quarter back on the beach and had him scan that area, so he would know what tone to listen for...he was so excited (but he does not know I put that quarter there,,,,shhh!) He found a few pennies by the time I left and I believe a dime. I didn't see anyone else out that night, if they were, they were a distances from me. I only stayed by 20th-21st street and then left....oh, also found a flatten penny with a pic of Scooby Doo on it!

So that was our adventure for the last couple of days. We are planning on hitting Croatan very early in the morning (the 13th) for a couple of hours. That beach is fairly dry compared to the oceanfront (as for finds), and gets crowded from about noon to 5 pm....and the surfers push the swimmers further down the beach too! UGH!!!

Other than that kids costume jewelry ring, no other items I have found...my day is coming soon!!! I feel it in the bones!

Sorry for the long post...enjoy reading all your posts. GraveDiggerMax, sure do miss your posts on Treasurenet and so do many others....we all love your pics and your stories :) Hope to see you on the beach sometime!

HH all,
Annmarie
