houdy i would like to direct this question to longhair if he is listining, i have been using the 705 for quite a while and it is a bottle cap magnet. i have not dug a single silver coin to date. i will admit i have dug silver jewerly and a gold ring , but what the heck do i need to change on my settings. i have hunted propertys dated back to 1894,several times, gridded every direction you could imagine and no luck.i have been to camp sites , the beach , old propertys . i have 4 differennt coils, i prefer the 15 " wot coil and yes it is is a coiltec. i have the digger coil and two minelab coils/ . i hunt in oregon and the ground is highly minerlized . i can run a magnet across the ground and it will be covered with particals of iron/ . i have read every thing out there. it is a clad magnet but what the hell. i have dug a thousands of hours worth of thrash . i only hunt old stuff , i dont like metal detecting in the public view. i have hunted campsite over 100 years old. the places i hunt is absalultly stuff that nobody else hunts. i go in the water with this md there has to be something i am missing. please help, but so you know i am going out the next chance i get. the next one is going to good . i dont have a 18.75 coil my wot is a 7.5 and the other ones are 3.s and 7.5s. do i need a 18.75 for the gold. my phone is 541=9-69=7712 . would like to talk to about the kind of mding i am doing

I am new to the Xterra 705. I too would like to hear some input on this. I only have two outings so far, so I can't draw any conclusions yet.

There probably is nothing wrong with your detector or the set up/way you're using it. The fact is, you just haven't put your coil over a silver coin. Its hard to believe that as much hunting in old spots as you've done you haven't hit silver but unfortunately that's probably just the case here.
Your 705 is more than capable for the task. I have been to homes from the teens and twentys that have never been searched and found nothing. Its been close to 2 years since I've found a silver quarter. And I also try to only hunt old sites. Have patience.

I did contact 67fordman, and related my experiences that closely reflect yours.
We also talked about trying different things, like experimenting with Tracking Offset to improve target response, and possibly employing Prospector Mode. Being in the PNW he has soil conditions that are challenging, but not insurmountable, and in all honesty I can't think of a machine more capable of dealing with it than an appropriately set up 705.

You still have to get a coil over it, and you can't find what isn't there. Not all old sites hold goodies, which is why it's a hunt instead of a harvest.
