705...volume stopped working

New member
while detecting the volume quits working, turning it off and on a few times gets it to working but soon disappears again.
If I leave it on and just watch the numbers....it will come back on for a while and then its gone again.
Not using head phone, I am wondering if its a simple speaker connection....
Has anyone had this problem?? its frustrating cause I have a great detecting week planned.

YES! That's funny because my X-70's external speaker(volume) also has just quit working last week. Through the headphone the volume works 100% though. I tried pugging and unplugging repeatedly the headphone jack then the external speaker would work for a short time then go dead. I read in the owners manual that if the batteries go down low, it shuts down the external speaker somehow. How are your batteries?? Mine are at half, on the battery strength bar. Otherwise I think we have a problem and I am not looking forward to sending mine for warranty. If we could take apart the headphone jack ourselves may save time. Thanks for bringing that up as I was also going to post that as well but put if off. If it is an headphone jack problem does anyone know how to take apart the headphone jack at home? OR is it an external speaker problem?

Also why is the headphone jack on the X-70 threaded where it comes out of the housing under the rubber plug? Is your X-705 the same? What can go on this threading?

Thanks.

Since the headphones work, I would guess it is a loose wire on the external speaker. I suppose it could be a dirty contact in the headphone jack, as the speaker circuit is "opened" by inserting the headphones. But I'd check the speaker first, if it were mine. If that isn't it, you could clean the contacts of the headphone jack. All of the above steps are dependent on how handy you are with small tools and whether or not you want to risk voiding any remaining warranty. If it has a warranty remaining and your manual dexterity leaves something to be desired, you may want to send it in to be serviced.

Both my X-70 and 705 have a threaded end on the headphone jack. I can only assume that it is threaded so a nut can secure it to the housing. Similar to your CATV jacks. JMHO HH Randy

Ok...started it up and everything was working fine. After five minutes..it went mute...even with head phones.
batteries register as top charge.
Left it turned on, had a cup of coffee...went back out, started swinging and it started working again...
swung it for 20 minutes and all is fine...its still on leaning against a tree, will go back out and swing...
did find a memorial cent..
hope it keeps working, have a good m.d.ing wed. planned.
thanks for the feed back Dave, will keep you posted.
I love this detector, am determined to get full use out of all its ability. Its my first decent gun.

head phones and speaker working fine now...
am wondering...yesterday was a dry winy day...maybe the electro-static air was messin' with it??

I had same problem with my X Terra 30 ...maybe the electro-static air  But a year ago.
Now i have not eny problems. Since functions without problem.

My 705 speaker also just stopped also, I took the head apart and found the speaker wire plug to the circuit board has a real loose connection. I plan to send the unit in for a replacement speaker wire this fall as I use head phones and no problem with the phone jack, the problem is at the circuit board connector.

I did try bending the connector contacts and not sure it will stay working as it is a real loose contact, I also sprayed the connection with DeOxit Cleaner and so far it is still working with no problem for the last three times out detecting.

Looks like they have a "Bug" to fix?
