705 threshold question

I just ordered a 705 and have been reading a lot about it. I have a few questions about how the threshold function is used. If I am in all metal mode does the threshold setting come into play or is it only used to hear the blank when your tgts are notched out. If I am way off in the purpose of this setting please let me know.
