705 problems

New member
any one having problems with the 705 turning its self off? My wife has had a X70 for about 6 yrs, it has be back to Minelab 4 times for the self turn-off problem. we bought her a new 705 and the first time out it turned its self off twice in about 30 minutes. Are we just unlucky or is this still a problem Wit X-Terras?

This has happened to me with my 705 and it turned out to be a battery problem. Either change the batteries with complete fresh ones or as a last resort, reach in with a paper clip and carefully bend the prongs out to insure better contact. I am sure this is your problem.

Thanks for the input. We went detecting today with no problems with the new 705, maybe the first time was a fluke. After all the trouble she had with the X70 ( it is working fine right now) we weren't happy when the new 705 turned off on its' own. But hopefully it will OK. We tried all the battery tricks on the X70 to no avail, each time we sent it in they replaced the board. Another couple that we hunted with have two X70s, same problem, all have been back to minelab several times.

This is the first that I have heard of a 705 doing this, but from past experience, my Tesoro did that and it was a battery connection issue. I had a friend that had that multiple times with a Whites and it was a keypad membrane problem. Let's hope it was just a fluke.

mrwalker,

I had the same issue right after I got my 705. It would turn itself off for no reason and eventually the pinpoint button would not 'click', not would it function. I ended up sending mine into Minelab and they determined that it needed to be replaced, which they did with a brand new one. Since the, no problems(fingers crossed). Btw....I tried fresh batteries and playing with the battery contacts with no luck. Hope you figure it out.

My xterra 70 had to go back for the shut off problem. My 705 is working like a charm.

Bought a new 705 three weeks ago. It has the same problem, but a new one on the way.
Have my fingers crossed.

WHAT A GREAT FORUM! Thanks to all.

My 705 has been flawless ................. thanks for the jinx, today it shut off for the first time! I had just changed the batteries, it shut off once, then it was OK. I'm hoping it was just a connection problem.

Mine turns off also, but only when i use it when it is hot. Take it inside and cool it down, use it outside when it is colder, see if it runs better. I tried to use mine in phoenix in the summer and could not use very well during the day. I think it is a cooling problem

I had the same problem (with shut downs) when I first got my 705. But it mysteriously fixed itself and besides a few unexpected shutdowns over the past year, I have not had any problems.

Never had any problem with my 705. Nor have brother with his. 705.....yet:)
They are just fantastic machines, simple quick and light.
My field detector Nr.1...

I hope it's not cooling problems, it's 110 plus daily here and I have never had mine shut off and 165 inside my car before it cools.

mrwalker,
Here I go again, I had the same problem with my Xterra 70. I changed to Duracell (coppertop) batteries and haven't had any problems since until I bought a 705 and had the same problems with the "other" batteries. But some of the other posters said I was up in the night and said I didn't know what I was talking about! Well, I was told that Duracell batteries are just a smidgen longer than the "other" batteries and the 705/70's like the longer batteries, but what do I know! Give it a try.

I had that happen to me to shut off and it was the cheap dollar store batteries i put in there as they where almost an 1/8" shorter and it lost connection every now and then..... went back to name brand and it was fine but you can also reach down in the battery box and gently pull the tab up a tiny bit being careful not to break it and that will give you a tighter connection.
