We're still wading through the 1400 pics we took on our vacation.. We stayed with family in Woodland Park Colorado on 36 acres. They have property near the summit of one of the smaller mountains (hills) in the shadow of Pike's Peak! What's more is that their land backs up to BLM land, so the hiking and exploring options were more than I could cover in the time we were there. The first thing I was shown were the various 'glory holes' on the property. These looked like craters in the hillside where the 'old timers' dug rock up, had it assayed, and then either moved on or kept digging. In the case of the 10 or so I found both on private and BLM land, I'd say they dug, found nothing worthwhile, and moved on. I hit these areas pretty hard with my 705 and 5x10 coil! Finds included the point of a pick, some modern bullets, brass, nails, a sardine can from about 1.5', and some 'sho nuff' hot rocks (iron bits). Unfortunately I didn't find any gold, but I learned a lot more about my detector. I was told about an old site at the top of the hill that was a large foundation with a chimney at each end. Nobody knows exactly what the place was, whether infirmary, house of ill-repute, or what. I still need to do some research on that one. Anyway, there was a TON of trash around there! I did branch out to search around the older trees-following the theory of less trash and some possible goodies dropped..easier finds... Right off I found a round bullet near an old rotten tree stump! Not gold but still kinda cool!
No great finds, but I did get to practice the tracking GB, and see how the detector reacted to hot rocks as well as large rocks in general. Seems those buried boulders are always somewhat 'hot' in their own right. I know I need to practice more with my detector and still need to learn the GB offset feature. I'm hoping to round up a buddy and do a fall or spring trip to New Mexico to do some prospecting next!
In the meantime, I'll be scheming on how to move to Colorado! There is so much land to hike and explore, and the incredible beauty of it all is awe inspiring! So different than the flat land here around Dallas, not to mention that almost everything is privately owned here!
