705 ground balance

When I ground balance my 705 I go to AM and swing across the ground and I get a ton of low tones almost everywhere. Sometimes there is an occasional mid to high tone but it's almost impossible to find a spot that's quiet. Surely there's not that much metal in the ground. I set my sensitivity at 22. Could even that be too high and I'm picking up sounds just from the movement of the coil over the ground or is the detector maybe picking up mineralization in the ground. I'm stumped. Thanks for any info Terry

I don't know where you're searching but I personally have been to spots that are as infested with junk/iron as what you describe. Its frustrating, I know.
Any more, when I get out to hunt with my 705 I run through automatic noise cancel, but only in new areas as I just don't seem to have EMI or other noise issues, GB tracking and hit the turf.
Before Mother Nature closed her bony fingers of death around our throats here in eastern Washington one of my last hunts was 52 wheats, 5 mercs and 2 silver Rosie's.

But even in Auto GB you have to check for metal in the way and that's what I'm doing when I get all these sounds.

Dang Bill, that's an impressive coin count. WTG.

I didn't say auto GB. I said GB tracking. Your machine will GB itself as you move along. I hunt mostly in areas that have had hundreds of homes torn down that are in the path of a future freeway. Imagine the amount of nails, bolts, pieces of siding and the list goes on. Trying to find a clean piece of ground to GB is nearly impossible.
I hunt these areas because of the trash. They are turn of the century to mid 40s, most detectorists hunt with way too much disc, and noobs get discouraged by the shear volume of junk. I go in and listen for those little high tone blips among the noise.
For me, GB tracking helped save my sanity and I don't think my success rate is half bad either.

One of the key features that brought me to the 705 was the GB Tracking. I live right where the glaciers stopped during the last ice ice, so the soil can be highly variable in terms of minerals from location to location; I used to have to retune my old detector constantly as I detected! With GB tracking, the detector changes the ground balance dynamically as you move around.

I hunt in all-tones all-metal mode as much as possible, as you get the most information to your ears that way. I like to run my detector fairly hot -- 27 to 30 sensitivity, if the site allows -- so running yours Terry at 22 isn't the problem unless the ground conditions aren't favorable. If a site is really trashy, I'll use as little discrimination as possible -- typically just the bottom notches (-8 to 2 or so) and the wrap-around at bin 48. That might fix your problem of getting a lot of low tones on each sweep -- it could be you just have lot of natural iron in the ground.

Note that once I get a good hit on a target, I'll drop the sensitivity a bit -- 20 to 25 -- so I get more accurate ID / pinpointing. I just run it hot to locate deeper targets (especially in prospecting mode), but the tradeoff is inconsistent tones and falsing; got to know your detector to know what's a good target :)

Don't be afraid to lower the sensitivity, i have to run at 17 in California to get away for the noise you are talking about, last year pulled 22 rings at parks with 8 being gold, i too run tracking because of the ever changing GB, give it a try.
