705 gold coil, to what degree is the coil "water resistant"?

So if the coil is "water resistant" does that mean, don't dunk it in a puddle? What happens if it gets submerged, quit working till it dries, fries the detector, what? Is there anything that can be done to make it more water resistant... silicone the edges, silicone the wire? Should I be afraid to use it in the rain? I kinda find it hard to believe that they even make a coil that is not waterproof. I've been know to use a bread bag and just keep on hunting in the rain.

I'm talking about the 705 gold pack detector, I think that it's considered a 5 x 10" DD coil.

In a post I made in the FAQFAQ section, "Water resistant: May be splashed, washed, used in drizzling rain, or moved through wet grass. Must not be submersed under water.
Water proof: Submersible to 1 meter. Ideal for shallow water wading and gold prospecting in shallow streams."

I think the concern of many manufacturers is that when coils are submerged, the water pressure varies by depth. My guess (and it's only a guess) is that they wanted to be on the safe side and made the two different classifications. Some can be used under water, thus waterproof. Water resistant coils will be OK with moisture on the coil, but not the "forced water pressure" from being submerged. I put a bead of silicone sealant around the edge of where the coil cover meets the coil. I also put a small dab on where the coil cable enters the coil. I've never had a problem with moisture from the grass or scanning through small l puddles. JMHO HH Randy

I agree with Randy's take on this. I, too, put a bead of sealant around the edge of the coil where the gap is and then covered that with 2 (tight) wraps of black tape. I also completely sealed from where the wire comes out of the coil, up about 2 to 2 1/2" above the coil and onto the cable, and so far (about 3 years now) no problems with rain, dew, puddles, etc.... I definitely do not submerge it though. That's what my 6" 18.75, or stock coil is for.

So what happens if the coil gets water in it and does it do any permanent damage to the coil or detector?

I spoke to a minelab tech as i thought the only diffrence was the stem...as it clearly is not sealed but according to the rep there is a whole lot more to it then just the stem. He said the entire inside parts and materials are totally different then the waterproof coils... Never would have known...

I agree with Randy, in that the 18.75kHz 5"x10" DD coil is NOT waterproof. I used this coil, on the beaches, but never submerged the coil @ any point and time. If you get it wet and it goes bad, it's not covered by warranty. Buy the waterproof coil.

And there it is ............... "and it goes bad"............ that's what I have been waiting to hear! I want sure if it was temporary, it just freaks out, the detector bursts into flames, or what. Thank you!
