705 falsing question

I was having some things going on with my 705 this past fall. I thought I had them worked out. I had it out this week when I noticed I would get a 48,-8 or a -6 when I bumped the ground or a root or what ever got in my path.I changed coils and get the same thing. I don't think this originally happened when I got my 705. Does this happen on your machines or should I ship it in for repair? I am running disc 1 with nothing blocked. 99 tones

sounds like you have the Sens. turned up too high ...

In a way it almost sounds like something in your control box may be bad if it does this with multiple coils. I could be wrong but if an impact is making it change then there could be a cold solder joint or other loose connection. I haven;t been very careful with my detector and it gets bounced around pretty good and what you are explaining does not happen with mine.

I know this sounds obvious but make sure you are pushing the coil connection into the box firmly and tightening the ring completely. Sometimes your environmental cover can get pinched between the ring and the body of the control box which keeps the ring/nut from tightening down all the way. In that case the connector could pull out just a little of the connection.

what sens setting are you running it ... mine does the same thing if I turn it up too high ... I found it very stable and still deep running around 22

I had the sens at 19. Not overly high. I just tested it and it will do this until I drop below 15, then it seems to stop with the digger coil. I know it runs a little hot but I dont think the falsing is normal.

must have some hot ground ... what does it GB at ?

also how fast are you swinging it ?

If you put on other coils and it does the same thing I would say that their might be something wrong with the unit. You should be able to run your Sens at max or close to it and not have falsing when you bump in to things that's not metal.

I would call ML....

yeah that does seem too touchy

It will false if I hold it in the air and bump the shaft

you must of posted this right when I made my first post..

I had that same thing with one of my X50's. it would false even when I held it in the air above my head. Send it in to get repaired.

Have you tried rewrapping the cord around the shaft to make sure you're not having cord being detected over the top of the coil or have a loose connection somewhere?

Have you tried a factory reset? Press and hold the chevron button down while you power it up.
The machine is capable of cumulative errors that manifest themselves in different ways, so a reset often straightens them out.
Worst case...it doesn't fix it and you have to send it in.

I was thinking about this again this morning and remembered that I had a similar problem at one point. It only showed itself with my 6" Minelab concentric coil. If I bumped the coil it would get very erratic readings and sometimes the thing would just start working perfectly. I was able to narrow down the problem to the coil after putting the coil on three different detectors. After sending the coil back to Minelab they said the problem was somewhere between the connector on the coil and where it was attached in the coil. They replaced the coil under warranty and being that it was may least favorite coil, I sold the replacement coil that they send me.

To me it really sounds like you have the same problem but your issue may be in the connector on the control box or where it's wires are terminated on the board inside. It would be nice if you have a spare coil to try. That would probably narrow the use down but I think you'll end up having to send it in. Although it won't hurt to try a reset, something tells me that's not going to solve the problem being that if you bump the coil or unit, the problem exists. If this problem was happening without bumping the unit then I would say that it was more software related and usually those issue can be resolved by a reset.

Get that thing fixed!! We're about to enter prime detecting season!!!

hopefully you will get it back soon ... they have came a long ways with CS

Finally sent it out a couple weeks later. They have it according to USPS tracking. I took it out once more before shipping it. I managed a couple old wheat pennies. The digger coil was falsing much more than the concentric coil, possibly due to how hot the little coil is. I hope there is no issue with it. To finish my equipment off my Grey Ghosts developed an open so I ordered a new cable. I honestly baby my equipment.I wonder if my wife is sneaking my stuff out while I am at work.

Have you auto noise cancelled?

I have this same issue with my Digger coil. I've had the Digger out a few times now and I have little confidence in it. My machine makes tones and noises that I've never heard before, the most interesting of which is like if you rolled your tongue really fast while making a tone noise (weird description for sure, but it's the best way to describe it) which happened a few times. Sometimes I'll get deep tones that disappear on re-sweep. I run multi-tones, AM or sometimes discrim with -8, -6, and 48 notched out, and no GB Tracking. I've put on my 10x5 HF DD and I don't have the issue and the machine runs solid so I think I've ruled out the machine itself. I tightened the shaft locks, coil bolt, unplugged then replugged the coil connection at the unit and it improved a little, but it's still a problem. Like others have said, the slightest bump, touch, or just a even a slight squeeze on the top and bottom of the coil gives a -8 or occasionally a 48. Auto GB was performed at all sites, but on the same spot of ground the GB reading after auto-GB is complete can vary 15-20 points day to day which may be normal after rain and weather? I'll contact Coiltek this week and see what happens, but perhaps there is a tip or trick I'm missing from your experience?

Looking back at my post above, I wonder if I have been running my sens too high and that's my issue. It seems just fine at 24-26, but does that seem too high for this coil? It seems solid enough, but I've been reading this is a hot coil and folks have been running with sens much lower than normal. Shoot, I can't get within 2-2.5 feet of a fence or tot lot equipment without a signal... What is the norm?
