7"Coils

I would appreciate any comments on the preference of either the Troy Super 7 or the old standard 7" Concentric coil on some of the older/or newer, Tesoros when hunting the iron and naily places. I have read where some of the older hands mentioned that they prefer the older standard 7"Concentric. I found that interesting because the Super 7 has a real good rep for seperating the goodies in the trashy places, and soon as I am able I want to find out for myself . I almost always pack an an extra detector for working those real naily places and thought I would compare the Sidewinder and the Amigo 2 with the different coils. Compadre 5.75 is great for this , but I wanted to also check out the other two since they are the next choices for packing in. I left about 12" of cable on the outside of the Amigo 2 and put a plug on it so I can do some coil swapping when I want to. I was surprised to hear that the older 7" was prefered by some in the trashy places, rather than the Super 7.I know the Super 7 is good, and goes really deep for me and wonder if the Standard 7 would compare in depth, or is better at separation, or both? . That is really interesting and needs some "vestigating"! Thanks, and HH. Charlie

I hope you mean you're going to compare the two different coils on each model and not compare one model with a particular coil against a different models with a different coil.

I always like having one than one detector along. I keep at least two in my rig all the time, unless wintry weather gets too nasty with snow/ice and sub-freezing temps and I can't do any detecting.

Yes, the 5

Thanks Monte, I am just going to compare the two different coils on the two different models. Even after so many years of detecting(since 69) it still amazes me that the effects of masking is not fully realized by many folks. It took a while for me to realize that fact and anything I can learn or do to improve my finds in a the middle of an iron strewn nail patch. I am going to try it. And it does add some excitement and fun trying different things. Trade offs are always involved too and it does come down to us making our own choices.Us older hands always naturally lean toward the lighter weight smaller coils, and try and travel lite. I always pack a bigger coil to swap to off and on, but with some of the older tech machines actually being better in the trash,it may come down to just relying on one machine. I always feel more comfortable though packing a back up, especially when it is lightweight and good at what it does.Found my oldest coin(178?small, thin, and cut, Real) years ago, with the Tesoro 4" coil. The coin was about 3" deep and covered in nails.I am always in hopes that one day I could make another similar find with a little larger coil, and just maybe I will,if I can find the right combination.. Thanks again Monte, your hands on experience and recall are amazing, and is always appreciated. HH Charlie.

I've never used the Troy coil, but have several of the Tesoro 7" coils and use them a high percentage of the time with good results. Definitely one of my favorites.

Troy Super Seven you say?

They are chile pepper HOT! Get one if you can find one, as deep or deeper than the 8 inch brownie donut, plus it seperates really well on the older ED 120 Tesoro's.

Hombre, I know they are Hot!! Way back I somehow wound up with an extra Super 7 in a buy I made and told my buddy I was keeping it for a spare because someday they would be be rare to non existant, and the spare would come in handy for some of us to share when we wanted to. I remember the first time I dug a really deep coin with it and how it really got my attention. You are right too about the Super 7 being a good combination with the 120's too, and I have a couple of them, and an Inca(it's a 90 ) that will be fun to play with.
