7.5KHz transmission interference with Invisible Fence?

Folks,
I'm interested in starting a hobby with the X-Terra, but am concerned that the 7.5KHz transmission frequency will interfere with my installed Invisible Fence. Anyone heard of such issues?

I've never encountered this problem, or even thought about it for that matter. But it is an interesting question. BarnacleBill is our resident expert on the adverse effects of Amplitude Modulation and Frequency Modulation. Hopefully he jumps in on this one. Until then, I'm willing to take a guess at it.....

For those not familiar with the technology behind the Invisible Fence, a tranmitter situated in your house sends a radio signal into a loop of wire that is buried in your yard. The dog has a collar that includes a receiver, tuned to the transmitter. When that receiver gets "within range" (3 - 15 feet) of the antenna (buried loop of wire), it activates a warning tone, telling the dog that he is nearing the edge of his boundary. If he doesn't respond (retreat) within a second or two, the collar produces a small electostatic shock to the underside of the dog's neck.

From what I've read, the Invisble Fence frequency can be switched to either 7.5 kHz or 10.8 kHz at both the control base and the dog's collar. If you are using your detector at 7.5 kHz an sweep the X-Terra coil over the dog's collar, I suppose you could trigger the collar to "correct" him (as defined in the fence literature). If that happens, you may want to switch your Invisible Fence and his collar to the 10.8 setting. On the other hand, if you are sweeping within the "broadcast range" of your fence (typically less than 15 feet) while hunting in your yard, you may encounter false signals in your X-Terra. Again, if this happens, switch the Fence components to the 10.8 freq. Keep in mind that the X-Terra 70 will operate in any of three different frequencies. 3 kHz, 7.5 kHz and 18.75 kHz. So you always have the option to not use the 7.5 kHz coil when hunting around your dog or in your yard. HH Randy

I don't have an invisible fence as I use the "hey dog get over here" system. But a quick perusal of their literature states they use a 30Hz tone modulation, not just Constant Wave. So in the dog's collar there should be a tone decoder which will not allow the collar to respond to an un-modulated 7.5KHz carrier.

Like Digger suggests I would look at switching the system to the higher carrier, as the fence might interfere with the detector. But, I would believe you are not going to spend all of your time inside the fence perimeter, unless you have the dog trained to dig for you.

If I were in your position I'd buy the X50 or X70 so I could switch to 18.75KHz if needed. Then find a really pesky neighborhood kid and have him hold the dog collar while you fire up the detector. No sense not having a little fun while furthering scientific knowledge. If the little beggar is still smiling, have him try to cross the fence to see if the detector carrier is interfering with the collar. I'm sure your dog will enjoy seeing one of the non-fur bearing critters get theirs for once.

Somebody that is willing to pee on electric fences "in the name of science" will try anything!

I saw a deer dog pee on an electric fence once. Lit him up like a Christmas tree, yelped and ran off. That had to hurt, Beale.

I got a chance to hunt where my Great Grandfather lived in the 1800's, there was a cellar hole and a field nearby. The owner of the new house on the property installed an invisible fence around the field and said when she was away, she turned the fence on to keep her dogs in-bounds. Well, the two times I went there to hunt, she wasn't home so whenever I got within 100 feet of the fence, my machine would pick up the blip, blips and the display would show assorted numbers, making it impossible to hunt except in the middle of the field. I also ran into the same thing with a sheep fence but I could get closer to that than the dog fence. I'll have to ask her if she can change frequencies and see if that helps. Ron

I detected near an electric fence once, I had to get far away from it before the pulses stopped interfering. The frequency may be to high for the detector to pick up on an invisible fence, I don't know. HH, Mike
