6X10 or new 10DD for beach hunting opinions helpful

I was wondering if anyone has an opinion on the new 10DD coil at the beach as compared to the 6X10'' that seems to be the favorite. Since this new coil is a DD and I prefer a round coil would this be a good choice for the beach? or is the 6X10 still the better of the two?

From what I've read on other postings and from what you describe, I think the new 10" DD is the better choice for you. I haven't used one, but do have the 6X10 which I like a lot, but the 10"DD wasn't available until more than a year after I bought it.

Would you say its performance is a significant difference? I ask because I know you can get the 6x10's at a resonable used price, but I imagine since the 10 DD is new its more money even used. I think new they are overpriced, in my opinion. Just want the best bang for my $$$ money is tight.

WOW! thats a great deal for a new coil, how long will this deal last?

I am going to be in the minority here, but I had both the 6x10 and the D2. I sold the 6X10 to get the D2.

I ended up returning the D2. It was light, pretty and easy to swing. What I didn't like is that it would get hung up on vegetation. Also, it would false alot and it just drove me bonkers.

There are other reasons as well, but I won't get into those.

And no, it was not a defective coil. And, yes I know how to run my DFX.

The 6x10 would "float" over any surface, it is more sensitive to smaller objects, and I could run it hotter with less interference.

I would not have a D2 if you gave it to me, the 6X10 gets my vote. I am shopping for another one now. I missed the last one on Ebay, it went for $76.

Don't get me wrong, White's does not make junk. It's a great coil, its just not for me.

Good luck, and I hope you are happy with whatever you get.

You made some good points Ken. I have used both, but not on a beach. On land I have to give the 6X10 the advantage of separation, and better ground rejection, (quieter) and small target ID. The D2 has the edge on depth. (There is always a trade-off in coil selection)

I used the D2 on the beach and the 6X10 still beat it, but that was my beach.

Not to argue with Larry, though.. what he says goes! we are not worthy! :please:

Too bad the Bigfoot is not in that list!

First I'll address your question specifically. You asked about a coil for hunting a beach, and asked for a pick between White's 6X10 and new 10" DD, but you didn't specify what beach or type of beach. On a Florida coastal beach, or any other beach that is neutral to low mineralized, the 950 concentric cil can work fine. You didn't mention which model detector you're using and that, too, might have a little bearing on the decision.

If searching a coastal beach that also has a high iron mineral mix with the salty content, or an inland beach that is highly mineralized (and we have them here in NW Oregon on a number of river and lake sites), you can see a pronounced improvement in ground handling with a good Double-D coil. The 6X10 does fine, but I get the same or better depth with a 5.3 Eclipse. I have found the 10" D[sub]2[/sub] Double-D coil from White's to be superior to the 6X10 for most applications, and this includes land hunting where I want a little better depth of detection. It's superior to the 6X10 or stock 950, in "bad ground'.

As for beach hunting, I haven't had the opportunity to use it much at the beach (coastal) since my only trip there with White's 10" DD was on an anniversary weekend get-a-way last month when it snowed right down to the beach and the winds were nasty cold and strong. I have used the new 10" D2 on some freshwater sites that are quite mineralized and it worked better then the 950, as expected, and much like another good 10" DD coil I once had.

A few years ago I had one of the Excelerator 10" DD coils, and what I enjoyed about it first off was the lighter-weight balance and feel compared with the stock 950 on both the MXT and DFX I had. I did use it on beaches and tried it against the 6X10 DD, also, and preferred the round 10" DD by far. For the past few months I have also had a10X12 SEF Double-D coil, also an Excelerator class coil, and I have found it to work well also. I get very good depth and coverage with it and when White's 10" DD was released I also got one of those.

Now, I will tell you I like the two 10" DD and 10X12 SEF coils over the 6X10 for most applications, to include beach hunting and open-area searches where I can take advantage of some improved depth they provide. Of these three, the 10X12 is heavier and while it works fine, I favor the White's 10" D2 coil I have because the lighter weight design is much kinder on my bad back and right shoulder.

Others have mentioned preferring the solid-bottom 6X10 for hunting in short, stiff brush and weeds to eliminate hang-ups and certainly there are times when the open coils can be a chore to work with. But you asked about beach hunting and I'd suggest looking the 10" D2 White's coil or the 10" DD Excelerator or 10X12 SEF coils.

.............arguments are always welcome Ken. Set up properly, the D2 should out perform the 6X10 on depth by at least a couple of inches. To back you up though, the Bigfoot is MY beach favorite where coverage is wanted more than depth.

I use the 6x10 as my main coil, dry land and beach, on my M6. It sounds to me like that if you already have a 6x10 then there would be no real advantage to getting the 10 inch DD. If you are looking at one of those 2 for the first time then I say it's pretty much a toss up right now since Kellyco has the 10 in on sale for $100. When the sale goes off I think I'd go with the 6x10.

I have used both coils and as I and 3 others that own the 10'' coil all on DFX's found out that on ''our'' beaches here on Long Island (NY) they would false all the time.

Hey there Gadget Guru, just for clarification allow me to ask-

All of them falsed on your beach or just the D2?

-I don't mean noisy, I mean flat out falsed where you could not even use it.

Im back to answer your questions! The detector is an M6 and I live in NewEngland, I find conditions at the beach vary drastically from one local to the other so I need a coil that can do well with variation, I do understand that I can only expect so much from a coil, no miracles. I find that a concetric coil works best inland so I will stick to my stock and a smaller coil. I just found out that K.CO. has the 10" DD excel. for only 124.99 new, nice deal! might have to just snatch one of those up! I really appreciate the input from you all!

on our Oregon beaches on both an MXT and M6 and didn't have a problem ... at least not one that was COIL related. I have seen cases where folks had issues but it was due to control settings more than the coil.

matter of fact, I am headed toward the coast early in the morning with my 10" D[sub]2[/sub] and 10X12 SEF for some beach comparisons. :)

have been using my M6 for most of my hunting, as well as the Prizm 6T. The 10" DD has been working quite well for me in the open areas.
