6x10 DD

basstrackerman

Well-known member
did an air test comparing my coils.6x10 DD and 5.3 . results were almost the same with the 5.3 edging out a win.DD did better on very small gold but was right at or 1/2 inch or so behind.. so my thinking is it would be a great all purpose coil,DD that is.little longer, cover more ground and about same width for tight areas. still waiting for snow to melt!! my wife and i are looking to move south so we dont have to live in deep snow anymore.im retired and get so bored in this nasty winter in ohio. i am an outdoors kinda guy. but anymore winters are getting to me.

Thanks for the air test Bill. I love my 5.3" coil and wouldn't part with it. Try to stay warm and think SPRING! We've not hunted since the end of November, so I know how you feel. Nancy

Too cold for you guys to go out, and too HOT for me to go out. Another few weeks it should be coming good...

Thanks for that info Bill. I've been using the 6x10 as my daily driver for a few weeks and as far as my limited experience has shown, it's been as good as a lot of people are saying. I just picked up a 5.3 about a week ago and have only tried it out on one limited hunt. As soon as I can pry myself away from the DD I plan on giving it a thorough tryout. As much as Nancy swears by it, I'm certain it will be another winner. Hope you get out to use them soon. Good luck.

Not to rattle any ones cages but, an air test in my opinion is not accurate enough to show how good a coil could be for depth. Take the coil out and swing it over the ground and you have a totally different story. You must remember that soil conditions play a big part on how a coil will respond to a target. If you want to do a real test and see what kind of depth your coil can get, make a test bed. That will show more accuracy in depth and target ID. Also, the detector has to be set up right for the conditions of the soil you are hunting. JMHO.

Yeah I guess you're exactly right sniper. That's why I joined this forum, to get real-world advice from all of you vets. No offense taken here. I know how much I don't know. I DO also appreciate all the info that everyone takes the time to share ( like basstrackerman's ) Every free moment I have I'm out hunting. ( MDing is just too fun, I think I was born to do this ! ) I haven't had the discipline to take the time to make a test bed yet but I know that it's a valuable tool in assessing and comparing detectors, coils etc. Think the landlord will mind if I plant a coin crop in his lawn ? JK Thanks for the advice. Suns coming up in a half-hour, gotta get ready to go hunt and I have just the spot in mind....

i have a test bed.its buried under alot of snow.lol i was bored so i thought i would humor myself.i know air tests will not give perfect results in the field, but i have always checked all detectors and all their coils with the same items just to give me an idea of power, sensitivity on small gold etc.some of my past detectors wouldnt pick some of my gold items up at all and could barely get a chirp when rubbing small gold across bottom of coil..these tests will give me an idea of what it may be best suited for. if i cant pick up small gold in an air test i am certainly not gonna use that detector to try and recover a lost ear ring. i will use the one that gave the best air test.thats it. just having fun. its cold and snowy and im very bored.

I don't know how much the air test will really tell. I think the real test is in the ground
itself because of the halo from the target thats leached into the ground. I use the
5.3 but as of late I've had to switch to the 6x10DD because of the mineralization I've been
running up against on farm land.

I've air tested my 6X10 and 5.3 with the 6X10 having a bit of an edge over the 5.3 for distance. In actual use, I mostly use the 6X10 due to ground coverage and the fact that it handles trash better than the stock 9.5. I like the 5.3 quite a lot when the trash gets heavy, but when the trash gets really tough, I switch to the 4X6. My two bits.
