64 Silvers, 345 wheats and NO INDIANS!?!

skyblast

I've been detecting now with my E-Trac for 15 months and have had plenty of success here in the Seattle area. Tons and tons of wheats (345) oldest 1909 x2 and a good amount of silver (64) oldest 1899 barber dime and an 1892 Barber Quarter but where in the world are all the Indian Heads?

As I understand it Indians come up like Zinc pennies right? Somewhere in the 11-30 through 13-38 range?

So when I do get a signal like this I then check the depth. If it seems like a deep zinc I dig.

Is there anything else that I am missing? I am also having this same trouble with Buffalos. No Buffalos thus far.

You think you would have swung your coil over one by now. You are correct on the numbers, but I dig every penny signal, one reason is you never know, and to get them out of the site I am hunting. I would not go by depth either, because I dug a 1901 IH at 1" 2 months ago. It was giving a solid 12-33 IH number but when I pinpointed it and it said it was just under surface I thought no way, but it was. I was shocked. I had never found an IH or a buffalo until I got my e-trac in febuary and since I have 6 Ih's and 4 buffalo's. I think you find them in time, but I know how frustrating it is wanting a specific coin. I have lots on my list to find yet. Good luck on your future hunts.

I found a IH with my "old Detector" when I first started to Detect and one Buffalo and then Nothing Again Until....

Forward almost three years later at the right spot I have found over twenty IH's, Buffalo and V nickels, my earliest Silver 1861 Seated Dime

I use TTF and a Open Coin Program and Bills Trashy Park Program

I evaluate and choose the program and found most of these coins within 5 inches

That's crazy, lol.

Well, you need to get your ears trained to the sound of them and start digging all the signals in that range. You might want to either buy a couple Indians and bury them or download the Etrac emulator and listen to that.

I don't know why, but most of the time Indians sound like crap. Only time they really "sing" is when there isnt much trash around. And depending on date, soil composition and wetness, they can come in from 01-31 to 16-41 or so. Most of the time they are going to be around 37 conductive though.

As for nickels, don't ask me, haha. No seriously, you just have to get used to the sound and realize that sometimes when you are sure it's a nickel at 8 inches it's actually going to be a beaver tail pulltab at 3 inches.

Ha ha...thats funny. I can't buy a wheat the last two times I've been out...but have found three indians...go figure!

Nice silver count by the way!

Thanks everyone for your kind responces and advice. Is there such a thing as an indian dance? Because I'm going to be doing one when I find an indian head penny. Wouldn't that be funny if it started to rain while I was dancing? Here in the northwest the likely hood is pretty good anyhow.

Skyblast, I've only hunted with my E-trac for two mos. now and this past weekend I went to a small farm town park from the 1860's for a 9 Hr. hunt. I got my first Merc dime 1937 and about 7 wheaty. I also dub 43 Zinc pennies and guess what NO Indians. Indians should be there. I plan to hunt that park all season until I find them. Don't Give up you'll find them when you don't expect it and the number will probably surprise you when you do. Good Luck

they have 12% nickle and may not be eas to detecty

well I found only one IH till last month when I figured it out...as I was told... IGNORE the numbers and listen to the tone and look at the depth. now I am up to 30 IH's. around here some come in at 9-35 some at 11-32 some at 11-36..see where I m going? I just dig every repeatable signal deeper than 4". now that I know how most come in I don't dig anything below 30 CO...but this just may be for my area and soil conditions. I hunt in the stock coin program with goes4ever's settings...I know the difference now between the multi tone setting...I can tell without looking if it is 20's, 30's or 40's CO I glance at the screen to give me an Idea of what's there..if not sure and it has good tones I dig.
another thing I learned recently is if Iron and a coin are in close proximity and you hit quick mask it jumps to the 30's FE and I have always been told this is junk... well if you hit pinpoint and go back over it the FE numbers can be in the 20's or 30's...that doesn't matter...in pinpoint mode the CO number will stay the same , say 35-42 if it stays at 35-42 it is most likely a coin. If it jumps around in pinpoint mode 35-42 to 35 49 to 35 -34 you probably have a rusty nail.

these are just my observations , and they work for me... no one ever broke it down for me I learned it on my own...

LoL. I share your sentiment.
I just found my first one last week.

I often wondered too. They are there, but are harder to find.
I think you really need to be in a place that was occupied in the late 1800's to dig them pretty conistently.

And, yes I was not digging any zinc signals for the last 4 months detecting, so probably did miss a couple.

Thats very weird! Have your tried testing some?

Actually yes. Comes up a solid 12-37. The first time I scanned it I yelled, NO NO NO...zinc penny signal. Anything but that!!!

gunwolf, that's a good tip on the PP. That's something I want to try out as soon as the local park department gets a chance to cut the grass in my area, if they don't do it soon they will need a harvester the grass is 12-14" in most areas! Thank goodness for Sawyers!

Maybe the Indians didn't like the Seattle area. To much rain! Lewy and Clark found them where the Columbia dumps into the pond.

UPDATE

Well I did it! An 1899 Indian Head. My first one ever. The signal started out as 13-35 and as I began to go down further and further it started to jump up to 13-38 and I knew that there was no way that a coin this deep would be a a zinc. Then out popped a nice deep yet bright round disc. I was thinking wheat but the numbers were in the thirties. Fingers crossed...1899 IH. FINALLY!!!

MAJOR MAJOR CONGRATS:clapping:

I know how you feel and the IH has become one of my Favorite Coins:cheers:

Thank you very much. After so much success in the area of wheats and silver I've sorta felt incomplete as an MDer not having yet found an Indian. OK. Now off to find a Buffalo.

Thats ALOT of silver for 15 month!
WTG!
