Will the 6000 air test deeper than it will detect in the ground or the opposite. I have always experienced deeper ground detection with other detectors but I'm not seeming to find any deep coins with 6000. I have have not had an opportunity to do a good comparison to my Excel on the same target. After I ground balance, I air test a quarter and get excellent depth but I was not sure whether that was an indication of what the detector will do in the ground.
I try to avoid using one detector's air test results in comparison to a different make or model. There are just too many variables. (operating frequency, coil design, electronic components etc. ) And, I don't think you will get an accurate determination as to how deep a detector will hunt in the ground. Again, too many variables. (mineralization, moisture content, Sig Bal level, etc.) However, I do use air testing to compare various coils on the same detector. And, I will use air tests to get an idea as to what a specific target might ID on the meter. When using a detector with Auto Trac, make sure you Lock in the ground or it will never figure out what you are doing! I think you will find that Signal Balance and sweep speed on the 6000 series will do as much to increase the depth of detection as anything. In other words, set the Signal Balance to a point that is just short of falsing. And, the faster I sweep the coil, the more sensitive it is to the target and the deeper it seems to hunt. JMHO HH Randy
