600 and 800

Gday,
The 600 is $899 and the 800 is $1299 recommended retail

I cannot mention any store name as its against this websites rules
.... but one big Aussie store chain has the 800 on sale for $1150 ($150 off )

Now i have to ask the dumb question......... there seems to be about a $500 difference from the US and Aussie land. Looks like a dealer here could still make money selling to you...... or are there restrictions or is it just that costly or risky?

Yes, restricted by the manufacturer...no US Minelab dealer can supply to Australian customers
Its the same with Garrett

Part of the price difference can be explained by the values of the dollars $0.75c US is about $1 AUD - so there is about 25%
Another is our local Govt taxes.are high - perhaps due to our large country versus our small population.... or maybe just a greedy Gov't ?
I think too that the much larger market in the USA gives greater buying power which can equal better wholesale prices.

Aussies can buy 2nd hand from USA but only privately ( dealers still are not supposed to deal with us) but buyers need to factor in postage (around $70 on a detector) + a 10% GST tax is on all imports

Or maybe it's that Minelab knows Australians have more extra money lying around and are willing to pay more... Seriously, though, I would have thought the Nox would be priced slightly lower in Australia, since that's where Minelab is located and it's not such a huge market that it would hurt Minelab to make do with a little less profit there.

Minelab ceased being an Aussie company years ago. ML sold out to Codan international. They are just one small branch of an international company which makes many different things. Yes, the ML branch is still located out of Australia, but there are also Asia, Africa, Europe and American branches.

I have been following Codan as a company for about 10 years. It is a VERY Australian corporation, It was founded by three Australians and I believe that all of its’s senior management and board are Australian.

With the exception of Daniels Electronics of Victoria BC, which it acquired in 2010, Codan has no significant technical/manufacturing presence outside Australia. Their international offices are sales and marketing units. Minelab detectors are manufactured by a contract manufacturer in Malaysia, Plexus.

Having said all that, the idea of selling products cheaper in your home country is not one which any company would think was a great idea.

Codan which includes Minelab has a huge, fairly new building here in Australia (Adelaide, in the state of South Australia)
It is here that the metal detectors are invented and developed by some very talented specialists
i think some Minelab manufacturing can be done there on a smaller scale (probably for proto types etc) but as Rick said large scale is outsourced eg in Malaysia etc

...so Aussies are actually buying an imported detector eg from Malaysia - but it was created and developed in Australia

Besides "Minelab" products, Codan also make mining tracking equipment "Minetec", military land mine detectors & defence equipment" Codan Defence" and Communication equipment " Codan Radio"

A lot of the difference in price is the difference in value between the US Dollar and the Australian dollar. The 800 at 899 us dollars would be 1227 in Australian dollars at the cyurrent exchange rate.
