I found this 6 pounder boreman today fired into a confederate trench line.

The one I am holding in the picture is a 6 pndr which I found today and the other is a 12 pndr I found a few years back pictured for scale. Yes, its always exciting to find a shell and the 6 pndr has been on my wish list for many years.

Hey I am going up to hunt some property in Va. the 2nd or 3rd week in april if you want to meet up, maybe have lunch or come with us, we will be at Manassas or the Battle of Bull Run hunting for about 3 days. We got some permission to hunt parts of the battlefield.

Looks like both Bormann dials are reading 3.25 to 3.5 seconds (you might check this) so for 6 and 12 PDR, this would place artillery from 800 to 1100 yards away from the trench (assuming a flat trajectory and level ground). Does this make sense based on your findings? PM me if you like. Might be able to get you on the artillery spot.

Thanks for the offer. Im a contractor and I have a lot of advertising rolling out in April and will be busy with jobs so I wouldnt be able to make it. But I appreciate it anyway.

[size=medium]Dave,

You seem to have an in depth knowledge of Artillery. I was wondering what distance overshot is usually found from the gun to the impact area. The guns being used are 20 and 30 pndr Parrots. 2 miles seems to be the magic number so far but any insight would be appreciated. Also with smooth bores 6 and 12 pndr's what is the most likely over shot distance?

Thanks,

Wish I had that type of knowledge. I am just learning about artillery. You might try at Civil War Projectiles forum and ask for Peter George. If anyone has that type of knowledge ...Pete Does.

Very nice find man; still trying to get my first one. Have found fuses, cannister/grapeshot, and schrapnel, but never a whole shell. Congrats.

[size=medium]Thanks ConfCav,

I hunted for an entire year looking only for shell before finding my first one. Success has a lot to do with research and finding the overshot impact area. Just keep in mind that if you are finding fragments, fuses and the parts to exploded shells that the ones that didn

I am not that familar with artillary either but varelic you seem to be pretty knowledged so I have a question for you, we have a site that we know the union used 2 12 pounders and shelled the confederates for 45 minutes straight, It says in the OR that they were overshooting the mill houses that they were trying to destroy, and we havent found any frags but have found canister shot scattered everywhere, we know where the mill house once stood, but har far past that could a 12 pound cannon shot from the ground? any help would be appreciated.

[size=medium]Cw,

The maximum range of the 12 pndr Napoleon is about 1619 yards which is a little less than a mile. One tool I've been using is Google Earth which has a ruler under the tool menu that you can measure distances in miles. Find the approximate union battery position and the mill and use the ruler to go from the guns towards the house to determine the 1 mile range of the 12pndr. There are other factors such as trees, terrain and the elevation of the guns but at least you know that the shells didn
