6 " dd coil question

fwcrawford

Well-known member
I just got my 6" dd coil and took it out for a hunt yesterday.
I noticed that on some quarters that the xterra 50 read them at a 45 mostly. All of the other coils I have for this detector read pretty constant at 42 for a quarter.
I also noticed that some pennies I located and dug were giving readings of 36 and sometimes 39 which are mostly dime readings on my other coils.
Anyone else notice these different readings?
These coins were not very deep in the ground and some were actually on top of the ground.
I do like the coil although I find myself swinging too fast and trying to cover alot of ground.
I would like to hear if anyone else has noticed the somewhat different number ID's.
Thanks

May have something to do with your ground minerals. I found 8 quarters this past weekend with my 6" DD and they all hit at 42. Dimes were at 36, Pennies were at 30 and 36, nickles at a solid 12 all the time. I really like this little coil, goes deep. HH John

When I posted that TID chart a year and a half ago, it was with the intention of giving folks a gereral idea as to what various US coins would read on their new X-Terra. The readings I posted were taken as bench tests, with the 9-inch concentric coil operating at 7.5 kHz. However, we must understand that TID numbers may vary with mineralization, depth of the target, angle that the target is buried and design of the coil.

As I mentioned a couple weeks back when I found the Barber quarter and thought for sure it was going to be a half dollar, my 6-inch DD coil at 18.75 kHz provides readings about a notch above where the TID chart indicates.

I still say the key to finding coins with the X-Terra is target consistency. Consistent location, consistent audio and consistent TID. Nothing is cast in stone. But the articles I wrote about coin hunting with the X-Terras, particularly the part about consistency, help explain what I look for while coinshooting. You can find them in the FAQFAQ listings above. HH Randy

I have noticed that the small DD ups the ID on semi deep/shallow targets against the stock coil. It also ups the ID a lot over a opened hole where the target is still buried in the bottom.

To find the deep goodies though it is not about target ID but about consistency and to get a signal at all.

This coil is capable of 10" or more on a clean target but it will not be ID correctly in most cases. Both lower and higher readings up to 48 readings can be noticed.

Keep the coil on and learn it, it will not let you down.

Cheers Guys,

Great to hear all your various reports...
Randy is correct on many of the factors he touched on.
Essentially, the ID number has all to do with MINERALISATION levels, angle, depth, shape, density of the target as it lies either in or ON the ground (as mentioned in one post)
Lying on the soil chances are the display might indicate [the true value] i.e. the conductivity ID value correctly e.g 12 for a nickel etc.

One advantage with the X-70 is Coins Stability Plus: we put in a set of filters and these filters are ONLY concerned with providing a [consistent numeric ID] in mineralised soils...eliminate number ID's bouncing too widely. Remember the deeper the target the more difficult it becomes for correct ID values...ESPECIALLY IF the soil works against you if mineralised enough to throw off a reading.
Give this specially designed filter set a try, recognisable on-screen with a + icon LHS accessed via the Mode Auto button (press & hold for several secs)

Good Hunting
