6" coil question

foreign object

New member
For those that have used it what kind of depth do you get.

I know that there are differences in locations but if you have a side by side comparisons with the stock coil would be good info.

Asked on another form and all i got was how good it was but noone would give any depth numbers at all. Makes me wonder if the depth is lacking.

Thanks guys

The purpose of the 6 inch coil is for target seperation in trash infested areas. Obviously with a smaller coil you are losing some depth so you can achieve better seperation. Each coil for its purpose. Hope that helps.

I had mine one and sold it because I didn't use it enough for the type of detecting I do (large open fields) and have since went with the 17 incher

If you do a search on six inch coil on this forum though you should find some past discussions regarding impressive depths reached with it.

I understand the purpose of the coil but at the same time if it gives no depth it has limlited use mostly to newer sites where most targets and junk are shallow. In some of the older sites that i hunt most tagrets and junk ( nails, lead etc) are down 7 plus inches and have dug the same down to 10 plus inches. So seperation without some depth is ok in some places but not in others.

My MXTpro with the Sef 8x6 will hit hard on 8" dimes and convince you to dig them at 9" most of the time.

So you see that if i spend 300.00 on a coil i expect it to get close to those numbers.

I have mild soil and run it maxed out so that tells you why the Sef coil does so well on my MXT.

Thank you guys for your replies.

it sounds like you didn't do a search for six inch coil on this forum like I suggested, here I did it for you...There are other threads out there about the six inch but I would check them out yourself... search back a year with six or 6 inch in quotes..

No I had not done the search yet. In and out.
I do appreciate you though.
Thanks

I have the six inch coil as well as the stock coil. I find very little difference in depth between the two. The double d coil is suppose to work the same as any double d coil should - straight down and not in a cone shape. The only difference there should be is in the width of the coil - 6 inches, standard, or 17 inches wide.

The way I look at the coils is each one is and investment in my machine so I can achieve better results determining the situation. If you are committed to the CTX for the long haul and like to hunt varying conditions then work on buying each coil. If you are really looking for more depth and have minimal trash the 17inch is nice but it is extremely heavy if that is and issue for you. I have purchased all 3 throughtout the past year and love each one determining the condtion I'm looking for. Depth wise the 11 and 6 seem to be very minimal depth loss while the 17 gives you a little more depth on your readout for better identificaion of course this all determines ground conditions as you know.

I don't notice any less depth out of my 6 inch. Works great in junk infested areas. Love mine and there are deals out there if you are patient. I got mine here on finds for $160.00.

I found a silver Roosevelt dime with my 6"er. It was up against a brick foundation front porch at a depth of about 8-9 inches. It was loud and clear and the numbers were spot on. I have no doubt that it could have picked it up another inch or two deeper.

6" is a must have! Great depth and even better separation

I have moderate mineralization , all I use is the 6 inch coil . I can hit coins as deep as the stock coil with the 6 . The 6 can be ran at 30 for sense in my ground and the stock coil can be ran at 24 where I'm at . I think the 6 takes less ground in than the stock which is easier for the machine to process and cleaner signals . There by giving it the same depth as the stock coil . All I hunt is trashy places and I love that 6 . I have found several deep coins with the 6 at 9 to 10 inches deep .But depth is not my thing , there are far more coins that are shallow that are mast . Deep coins come every now and then . But what I want is separations and the 6 gives me this you will love the 6 . sube

The 6" will be on my next months buy list.

I ran a test this afternoon on a recently buried dime and quarter. The soil in my backyard is woods that has never been inhabited; and is thrash free. The CTX usually sets the auto sensitivity between 22 and 26.

The coins were about 6" to 7" deep laying flat. The 6" coils was somewhat iffy in finding and reporting either coin. I tried many different settings with "deep on" helping. Even manual sensitivity turned up to 30 made little if any difference. Since I knew where they were pinpoint would find either one and ring out load and clear. The 11"coil had no trouble and would sound off on the quarter even held 2" off the ground.

For me the 11" is deeper and harder hitting based on the results of this test. I use the 6" quite a bit, I end up putting it on whenever trashy areas overwhelm the 11" or me; almost every time I am out it goes on for part of the hunt. It is great for separation but maybe missing some finds. Also the numbers were of several points low on both the quarter and dime, making me believe I may have passed some up thinking they were pennies; yet at the same time I dig pennies that read 42 with the 6".

Just for comparison I took my 705 with the 6" Digger coil out. It actually hit harder on this test than the CTX 6".

My serial # is below 200 maybe the newer ones are hitting as deep as the 11", but mine today in this test did not.
