6" coil Frequencies

CQuarles

New member
It's been so long since I've visited here, I can't remember what the differences may be between the high frequency, and medium frequency 6" coils may be. Can someone refresh my memory?

Briefly.......6-inch concentric is 7.5 kHz. 6-inch DD is 18.75 kHz. Quite a bit of additional information in the FAQFAQ section at the top of these posts. If you have other questions, fire away. HH Randy

In the past everyone agrees, including Randy, that the 6" HF DD is better for trash seperation than the 6" MF Concentric. The narrow knife blade field of the DD is better than the wider Concentric field, and also the HF does not seen to be bothered by the low conductive trash and people seemed to be happy with it.

Thanks to both of you for your response. I tried looking at the FAQFAQ, Randy, but for some reason I couldn't open some of the posts.
I have the HF 6" coil, but I seem to remember having read somewhere that the MF has an advantage in some environments. I just can't remember what they are. I hunt ghost towns fairly often, and the HF coil has been a boon, but I'm always looking for an edge. Thanks again....

Let me know which links you're having problems with and I'll see what I can figure out. In the meantime, other than open field hunting, I use the 6-inch DD coil 90% of the time. It has surprising depth, excellent separation and is hot on small targets. The only thing I don't like about it is that it is much more sensitive to lower conductive targets than the lower frequency coil. Now, that is fine if you are looking for gold. But as a coin hunter who sometimes hunts in very trashy sites, I get fooled by aluminum can slaw in parks and some deep nails at homesteads. The lower frequency seems to provide a much more distinct audio tone on these lower conductive pieces of scrap, allowing me to discriminate them out with my ears. I was in hopes that Minelab would produce a small DD coil at 3 kHz. But having beat that horse to death in the past, I think I'll have to make due with the higher frequency and accept the fact that I'll dig some occassional trash. HH Randy
