5x8DD Vs Sniper for depth, advice.

Well it sure has been a long winter, it'll be real nice when the snow and frost gives way for us northerners to get back out.

I run my 5x8 ever since purchasing the Gold a couple of summers ago, is there a noticeable depth difference +/- with using the sniper coil? This year there are a lot of places I want to detect but I think it would be easier with the sniper in most of those places as it's tight quarters. Foundations, scrub cover, thicket's etc. Thanks in advance for any advice. Cheers an HH. Jon

it really amaze's me, how a simple question cannot be taken, time to be answered by the vast experience on here, especially by Edmonton the moderator John. For what ever the reason is, it really doe's not matter much. However it seems to be since I posted my find of the 22 k gold ring posted late last year, that the tides seemed to change here. If that's what this forum is about................competition.............then how be you count me out. Ya i found a really nice 22k gold ring that was 1 point under half an ounce, and it seems to have ruined some of your many detecting years searching for the holy grail so to speak. Guess what, life's not about that at all. Cheers and from my heart happy hunting to the competition. I'm out of this competition. John from Edmonton, shame on you for not taking the time to offer equalization, and that I see is what you really do. Time is only waiting to bite you in the ass, which, trust me it will!

Jon

Take care to the ones of you who don't belong in this equation and may a good peace find the ones of you who do!

I don't know about the sniper's depth but with the 5x8 I was pulling things out 7..8 inches deep. I'd assume by the design of the DD coils they would be hitting deeper than the sniper, but I can't be sure.

ty Steve, I never tried a sniper before and it's the experience i was asking for help on here with, so maybe my question here may answer for you the same question I am asking lol, if that makes sense. HH and ty for taking time out of your day to try to help, cheers and good for you!

I only gold prospecting in river and have no experience in park/sand. I have both coil and I find that there is no real difference in depth between the 5x8 and SniperCoil ..But Sniper is more sensitive on small gold !!!
For what i do Sniper is the best coil ! But 5x8 = more ground coverage !

Sorry bad English but i try..

I remember when I got into this hobby in 1966....when silver and gold were really abundant because there were virtually no one else in it. I had an old Whites and was happy as a clam. Then I got a couple of other detectors and somehow ended up with a Fisher Gold Bug 2. Then I realized that I really did need a good coin machine and acquired the ATPRO. I love that machine but then went to the 5x8 coil and love it. I do at times think that I would like to get a sniper coil just for those areas like you are talking about. From general reading it seems like I may lose a little bit of depth-----but isn't that almost always the case when you go to a smaller coil. Anyway, happy hunting, and HAVE FUN!!!!!

I have the sniper coil on order. Should be here in a few days. I have spent 20 to 30 hours now hitting the bedrock with my 5 x8 coil. I noticed that I was having issues getting into the cracks and for that reason, I ordered the sniper. Having said that, the two nuggets that I found were both on flat bedrock, go figure! I will post my findings on the sniper coil when I get it.

Hi,,,,I find it funny almost hilarious that M_d_in_guy is kinda implying that the moderator John might be jealous in someway....One thing I know for sure is Professionals do not get jealous...Consistently finding good items when others find little to nothing is just one part of becoming or being a Pro....Anything that someone else finds is always a very welcome sight regardless of it's size...A seasoned Professional learns to grow and feeds off of other peoples good finds....Jealousy never enters the picture at any time, it only makes the Pro hunt harder and become a better hunter.....I feel that a moderators job is to see that a forum runs smoothly and properly and not answering every question...A forum would get boring quite fast if a moderator answered every single question, especially when it's been answered before....This forum is designed for all of us to use but not to abuse it....You should consider it a privilege to use it not a right....Here's a little info that may guide you a little, just use the search on here that's what it's for....http://www.findmall.com/read.php?79,1929783,1930098#msg-1930098 I did not post this to get anyone one mad I just had to speak my piece....I'm sure that anyone that considers their self to be a Pro or is working towards that goal will wholeheartedly agree....Thanks....JJ

This is what is being said about the purpose of the Super Sniper in the Marketing videos. I own one and love it for tight places and trash infested areas at parks and schools. It goes where the 5X8 DD can't. I personally don't think it would have any added depth over the 5X8 DD coil. I've never seen any comparison depth charts. Air tests could be performed. Usually when in tight places, depth isn't even an issue. HH

I bought the Nel 5" Sharpe its called (sniper coil). It's a dd, I couldn't find any info on garretts sniper being a dd coil so I don't think it is. Anyways the Nel sharp works great on my atgold. Costs a little more than the standard Garrett sniper. Before useing the nel I only used the 5x8, and if there is any depth loss its not enough to tell or make a difference. Sure does separate awesome though. Going to put it to the real test at some ghost town foundations this wk end.

I think that I recall this question being asked before and John from Edmonton answering it with a chart showing the differences. Could be wrong; the memory ain't what it used to be. Try searching the forum.

Why is the sniper coil not as deep? Think about the dimensions of the 5 x 8. It is an 8 inch coil that is narrow. No way a 5 inch coil is going as deep as an 8 inch on coin sized targets. I've dug coins at 12 inches (without ID numbers). No way a 5 inch coil is going that deep. But for very small targets like grain sized gold nuggets, the 5 inch is hotter. So somewhere in there it will pick up the very small stuff a little bit deeper than an 8 inch coil. And it's going to work better in high trash areas. But it doesn't cover as much ground so you sweep over fewer targets in a given amount of time. The 5 x 8 does such a good job, the sniper coil is not nearly as popular. But for $100 if it makes one nice find it has paid for itself.

I regularly use the sniper coil and I have been pretty impressed with it's performance so far. I have dug several targets @ 6 inches with it. Separation and pinpointing are awesome!

So, you post up a question and flip out if you don't get an answer two days later. Perhaps a wee bit of patience in the future ?

Don't worry about it M_d_in_guy, I get the same response from the same people, Nada. I just can't be bothered with it, this is a great forum and a whole lot of great people on it. I guess we haven't hit the "inner circle" yet (or maybe never will) but life is to short for that sort of stuff (for me anyways).

:)
