5900/DI PRO SL

Picked up this Whites today looking forward to learning it.
Printed the manual now the fun starts.
As of late was using and still use the XLT and MXT
Always wanted an analog machine. How does it compare in depth to the newer units ?
What can I expect from this classic ?
Does this one qualify for the tone conversion ?

Hi Joel

I don't think many people are using these old machines anymore. I did the full circle with my detectors, I bought the XLT as my first detector in 1994, then DFX in 2001.

Now all I use are the analog detectors......and those are 6000 Pro XL, 5900 Di Pro SL (CB) and a IDX Pro (Mr. Bill moded) as far as White's detectors go.

My 5900 Di Pro SL is as deep or deeper than my old XLT was......and once you get the hang of adjusting the signal balance up to optimum beyond the pre-set and get a good ground balance.......

It will keep up with about any detector I have played with. I use the 5.3 BlackMax coil (6 &1/2 inch) excluseivly on my 5900 & 6000 and with the signal balance adjusted beyond pre-set and ground

balanced properly you can get better depth than you would believe out of these small coils.

Also with a higher signal balance adjustment you can use a medium to moderate sweep speed and get great depth of detection with these old analog detectors and better trash seperation.

As far as tone Id modifications for the 5900..........I don't know, but I do have this mod on my 6000 Pro XL and it is GREAT !

There are more people using them than you think. I have had an MXT since they first came out, had the XLT and DFX, still have Tesoro and Fisher machines and prefer my XL pro over all of them. 5900/6000 Pros, set up correctly, are deep.

Yeah...I agree with Mainer. I've got a MXT factory hipmount that works great, but I can't put my 6000 Di Pro SL down long enough to learn the MXT! Maybe one day.

I have been MDing for 37 yrs. and i still have and use 4 older analog machines whites 6000 Di PRO SL XB,Fisher CZ-6a,Tesoro Toltec II,Garretts CZ II.
I used to own a Detector shop in in South Central N.Y. so these were in my showroom for demos.
I hunt with 3 others guys and our machines run the gambet 1978-2010 most top of the line (have older machines but they dont go beep anymore).
The meters on all my analog machines have pretty much the same amount of infomathion on them as the newer IDs....i see it all at once... and dont haft to scroll for it... the analog meters run a lot finer than the ditg.... still lies ....but not as often!!
thanks Gary G.A.P.metal

Joel, I use my 4900 DL/Max for prospecting in heavy mineralization and for beach. It has the same 4 filter detector engine as the 5900/6000 di Pro SL machines but with no meter, which I don't need anyways, as I "dig all" on the beach and prospecting. It is lighter with no meter. The XL Pro is a keeper if you can find one. The Classic III sl, ID, IDX are all well proven 2 filter machines, killer in iron infestation and has a slow sweep, quick response that work well in trash, to this day.

i like my XLT..... it's a great gab and go detector for me..... but when i get in a hot spot.... i end up going back to my 6000/ Di Pro SL.... I spent months learning how to use it.... and i can get a dime in the center of the donut every time...... the XLT programming gives me the luxury of skipping "mabys"... so i often do...... the 6000 doesn't skipp anything:detecting:
