I have a question for the more senior hunters out there.
Yesterday I learned that I need hearing aids in both ears. When MDing do I remove the hearing aids or not? Thank God, my hearing loss is not in the bell tone range.
Thank You in advance for your feed back.
Your Friend,
John D.

Good question! Providing you are using a decent pair of headphones, I would think that you could remove them and adjust the volume on your Garrett to whatever level is comfortable for you.

If you arent using headphones... then get some. Detecting with them is another world altogether. Pick up a pair on ebay for $15

Im looking forward to the answers on this one.

peace,

1st Thank You for your speedy reply!
I was lucky enough to find this forum just days after I bought my GTP 1350 and it seems that everyone recommends earphones so I went back to my Garrett dealer and bought a pair. By the way I bought about three different less expensive earphones just to have them break one way or another. The Garrett's I bought seem to be unbreakable, they are worth the price.

Having spare headphones is a must. At one time I collected them like some people collect stamps. I probably have a lifetime supply! BUt the point is that good headphones:

1. Save battery life by reducing the amount if current needed to create an audio response over a target. Audio frequency reproduction in air consumes a lot of power.

2. Allow you to hear things you WILL NOT otherwise hear. There are subtleties in most of the tones and sounds made by a detector that once you get to know them, help with target ID.
Garretts are not as "toney" as some detecos, but the nuances are still unique and you cant react to them if you dont hear them.

You are also right about the Garrett's being stout. THey will suffer alot of abuse - altough dont give them any. Treat them well. The 1350 is a great machine...

Hi John D. I can relate to you about the hearing loss. When I first started in the hobby (1993) I had to get an aid for one ear. Hearing loss progressed until I needed one for each ear. I always wore headphone over my hearing aids so I would not miss any soft, faint signals. Over the last few years I have lost all my hearing and now have a cochlea implant(thats like a bionic ear) and I still get out there every now and then and do some detecting.Good luck.

Sorry to hear your hearing is going in the dumper bud. What a bummer. I would try it both ways to see which works the best for you. That would be the logical way to go. Good luck.

Bill

Well,
I have my answer. With my new hearing aids, I can now hear the slight differences in the tones that I could not quite hear before.
Now I am going to find my "pot of gold". Just last week I found a 1827 penny and a 1867 nickle. I would have missed them both before because they would have sounded like junk before I bought my hearing aids.
Happy hunting Your Friend,
