505 Noise cancel

I have been using my 505 for a couple years and it works great. After a lot of reading and thinking about upgrading to a fbs machine, I am more inclined to get another coil for my machine and keep it for a while longer(or forever). My question is that without a lot of emi (power lines, etc) the lower the noise channel, it only seems to bring my ground balance numbers up. I guess this is good as I can run a higher sensitivity. But am I missing targets because the machine isn't noise cancelled to the best position? How can I balance it when I have nothing to base the setting off of. I can change the setting and it makes no difference in audible noise. FYI I have only had 2 locations so far where I couldn't run the 6" 3khz dd coil at all because of the emi. In these locations I had to use the 9" mf concentric and change the noise cancel channel to get it to be stable, but it seemed to work just fine. The 705 is tempting but I don't want to take an expensive baby step just to get auto noise cancel. So I guess my question is really how important is noise cancel if there is no audible emi and how do I determine where to set it? Should I keep doing what I've been and use the lowest setting possible to get the highest ground balance numbers?

Hi Davey, and welcome to the forum.

I've used the X505 for many years now and the only time I change the noise channel is when I'm at a place that has a lot of chatter from EMI's or from other things. I always try to run the X505 in the " 0 " channel. I feel the x505 works best in the " 0 " channel, but if you need to change the channel because of EMI's then do so. But when you go to a different location make sure you change it back to " 0 " when you first start at a new place.

Thanks Mark. The only reason I even came upon this was looking up comparisons between detectors. In a 705 vs 505 thread It was stated that the 705 could potentially have better depth than the 505 because of its auto noise cancellation picking the best channel. I wonder how it is measured by the detector.

I mainly urban hunt, so I run into a lot of emi. The 705 handles the emi as good as any detector I've used with both the 10.5 inch MF DD coil and the 9 inch MF concentric coil. I will say this,I use the automatic to set the noise cancellation and it has used all the freq. numbers at least once. It sometimes changes when I change locations a lot in the +2,+1 and -2. I have had -1 and zero before. In my opinion it gives some edge in depth on deep targets.I think having your machine tuned to the max is a difference maker. HH
