5000/D and 6000/D G.E.B. detector questions

Hello,
Let me start out first by stating that I am a NEWBIE in the metal detecting world, and I stumbled across this great site the other night when I was looking for answers about some technical questions regarding a couple of older White's detectors I picked up recently. As I said, I am a newbie, and wanted to start out with it reasonably cheap until I know me and my family will endear the hobby, so I bought a couple of older White's GEB's at a hard-to-beat price. I am into old Indian and colonial relics, and have several sites to hunt for them (which I hope have not been picked over too bad, and I don't think that they have). I bought the GEB detectors, and also bought an 11 inch search coil in mint condition, but when I tried to mount it up on the 5000/D I noticed that the pins in the coil lead were male, and the pins in my 5000/D were male also. Is there something about the GEB detectors that will not allow a non-GEB search coil to be used on them? The plugs themselves are identical, but both are male terminals. I wanted to use this bigger coil to get a little more depth out of my 5000/D and 6000/D when searching a couple of creekside sites. I could easily de-solder the plug off of the search coil head and solder on a female off of a donor unit, but before doing that I wanted to make sure I wouldn't screw up the machine. The 5000/D works great as I took it to a local park on Christmas Eve to try it out (after figuring out the GEB settings by visiting Whites site with the down-loadable owners manuals, without which I could have never figured this machine out) and found several dollars worth of change in a 20 minute time period without even really trying. I noticed several of you out there have a great depth of knowledge on these units and I would appreciate your letting me tap your brain for some advise! Any help you guys could be, from tech knowledge to where-to-get-parts knowledge, I would really be thankful!! God Bless all and have a Safe and Happy New Year!!

By having a different plug on the coil means the coil will not work on your detectors, even though it is a Whites coil. There are several different model coils out there and you got the wrong one for those model detectors. You will need to trade that large coil for the correct one with a female connector, just changing the connectors will not work. The correct coil you will need will have "6B" stamped on the left mounting ear of the coil and will have a female connector. I still have a few of them around here. Hope this has helped, Keith Wills

Hello Keith,
Thanks for your help, do you have a 10 or 11 inch coil that you would like to trade? Or do you know of anyone with a larger 6b coil? I would like to have something for a little more depth. I don't expect miracles out of these old machines, but I just cannot afford to run with the big dogs yet. I have to settle for a poodle!

I will check the coil I have to see what it says on the mounting tab. The coil itself is in great condition, the cover is decent, and the cable is in good shape other than a small abrasion near where it enters the head, but it is not into the wires themselfs, just the outer housing area. I will take a pic of it and post if interested, I am interested in a trade of some sort if anyone else is!

Dan:

What type of coil is it(Manufacturer?)
I just do not recall Whites having a 11 inch coil back in the days of your detectors..
In fact i am not sure they have an 11 now...

I've got a 6000D and its a super machine also a DFX and I believe the old 6000D will detect just as deep with the same size coil. Ken
PS. I bought the 6000D new and kept it all these years and kept it great condition.
