50 coin day: Spectacular silver...need ID help!

From the land of the Bluenose....was one of those days where the wind would rip right through you. In other wordss a good day to detect.

Left early after making the boss breakfast in bed and hit a few places in Halifax. The first school yard I hit yielded 50 coins in no time flat so I thought I'd wander down to one of the old spots that I have hammered for years along the far side of the harbour. Here the first target turned out to be a musket ball and the second...............made my heart stop. Not quite sure if it is Spanish or French but mister man was the old ticker a pumping!

Carefully cleaned her off a bit and took a few photos of her on the hood of Goquicksi when still shaking, returned from the path. Here is one side.

And here is the other.

Any help on identifing this coin would be appreciated.

Any way the take for the day was this coin, small silver ring,an action figure, game zone token musket ball and 67 coins @$2.76

...Awesome is as good. Super find, the kind I only dream of. Makes them cruddy CW bullets and buttons, silver Mercs and 'Roosies I find look like crap.

It's old thats for sure and appears to be a well-worn Spaniard, probably hammered by the look of it. A full 'Real' of one sort or another, from early times. Mayhap Old Blackbeard hisself had it at one time, considering where you live!

It appears as if it's been clipped, too. The edges are gone, the lettering actually severed. That is why we have coins with reeded and lettered edges, even though that is an added step and was hard to do in the olden days. Enterprising folks like tavern men, merchants and others would clip the edges of the coins and collect the "shavings", eventually to have a nice little pile of silver to melt down.

Ever heard the term, "clip joint?" Now you know where the term came from.

Beautiful find. I'm curious as to where it came from. It doesn't look like galleon coins, probably newer (but real old). I thought the Spanish ones had shields.

Magnificent find bud. Looks to be a very old reale of some kind. Can't make out the lettering. I'd get it checked out and authenticated. You lucky dog you. :)

From the land of the Bluenose.....well the general concensus is the coin is a reproduction and can you believe it from a child's game. Well it still was a rush when I dug it up. Took a knife and chipped at the edges and it is plated. Had passed a magnet test. maybe next time I'll get the real thing!

Just goes to show how easy to be fooled.

Stll, you can skip the vinegar and cod liver oil today, Les. Your blood is thin enough after that!

I must have looked at 500 coins last night trying to ID that thing Les. Oh well, maybe next time.:stars:

Ah - a NITRO moment ! Well, I wouldn't believe the ID entirely until I saw the game. Then I'd probably have to buy one for reference. Don't toss it yet.
