50 cent piece of a different kind

on-edge

New member
this was given to me as a gift from a family member
i though is was kinda cool so i decided to share it
i have no idea what it is, i'll have to search around on the web
unless someone here may know?
it is very thin and delicate, i had a hard time taking it out of its holder to get a scan of it!
i have others that aren't as old, that i'll try to post later
thanks for looking

That is very cool! I have never seen one like it before. I am betting it is worth some $$, Beale.

here are some more,i guess i'm going to have to start collecting paper also
i hope no one minds me posting paper here,i have a few more also

Confederate bank note. Not necessarily rare, but very cool to have as the majority of people just threw them away when the confederate banks were dissolved.

hi on edge, i'm glad you posted up your currency collection - it's a neat and varied one! i believe you have a fractional confederate banknote there. like shambler says, it's not real rare but it's cool to have. i've been known [ along with a few others] to post outside of the metal detecting thing on here from time to time - it keeps things interesting. thanks, and hh!

thanks for the information everyone,it's appreciated,a confederate bank note that is cool
i have a handful of coins that were given also, nothing really out of the norm i'll post some pictures
of those latter,thanks for looking

Very Nice Note . I really enjoy seeing them . Thanks for posting ,

that is a real good one terri! i like the red,i wish mine had some color,it might be easier to make out if it did
i can bairely make out virginia on mine, and thats with an eye loupe, thanks for showing that!

The paper used was made from cotton fiber/ "rag paper". Almost all paper now is made from wood pulp that is bleached, hence it turns brown and dissappears. I was doing some work in my new house (over 100 years old) found some stuffing behind the plaster and lathe (wood slats). The stuffing was newspaper from 1903..... still clean and readable, I spent hours reading the old want ads and advertising, not to mention all the local stories. The money was made from the same paper and holds up over time, vs modern paper. I believe our modern money has some rag/fiber in it but I dought it's 100% Anyway enough ranting. Yall have fun!

Great information! I was privileged enough to get permission to hunt an 1850ish trading post site between Indianapolis and Cincinnati. The house on the site was built in the late 1890's and recently took a bunch of storm damage The owner tore it down because it was too costly to repair. He found TONS of papers sealed in the walls -- seemingly for insulation. In the papers were accounting documents for the trading post. No other historical data shows a store on that site, but it's clear there was one there. The paper was incredibly well preserved -- I'm wondering if it was non-wood pulp after reading your post.

I found some really cool stuff with my 'tectors but new Indiana law is a little fuzzy so I'll abstain from particulars. :veryangry:

Terri you have some very nice notes! I really enjoy seeing the old paper money. I do not have any, Beale.

Hi Shambler , Very Cool that you were able to hunt the trading
post and make such interesting finds . I live in Central IN. and am
interested in what new laws you are speaking of , shoot me a pm please

Terri

terri those are all great notes you have there, thanks for showing them
now i think i may be hooked,i already want to collect everything!
with not enough room to do so!

R-N-R thanks for that info very interesting
those old newspapers sure are fun to look at,thats one of the reasons in like remodeling jobs digging
through those walls, when we did my moms house the walls were loaded with newspapers from 1905
i spent the longest time going thru them and reading the lost and found sections looking for a peice
of lost jewelry or something to go find, but there was nothing local, all the lost and found were from the
boston area,too bad!
i was on a remodel job on a old school house a good number of years ago, when i started tearing into the walls
we were finding that a lot of the cavities between the wall studs were filled with crumpled up paper
when we opened them up there were everything from love notes to badly graded test, erasers pencils, compases, gum
hate notes etc.,when we got to the downstairs i opened up some walls and i found two coal chizels, and one of them
was made by winchester,it had there emblem stamped into one side, winchester tools very collectable!

On-edge those treasure type hunts:laugh:would be very interesting.
One of these days you'll find that hidden cache:thumbup:
