5 x 8 DD vs 8.5 x 11 DD depth

Hi guys,

I was wondering what are the max depths of each of these coils? I know the 8.5x11 goes deeper, but by how much? Been finding a lot of clad with my 5x8 but no oldies and usually I find my modern clad a lot deeper than I expect - makes me think I am not going deep enough with this coil to find older coins on old lots.

You might get another inch or 2. Old coins are not necessarily deeper. I've found clad at the limits of my detection depth and old coins right near the surface, but you can't find what isn't there. It's always been my guess that coins move up and down thru the years as the ground freezes and thaws, erodes and then covers, lotsa different conditions that will make them move. That's why no spot is ever hunted out. As a general rule tho, I always think that the size of the coil is generally how deep it will go. A round 8" coil should get you 8" of depth at the max range. The oval DD's, I add the 2 numbers together and then divide by 2. 8 1/2 + 11 = 19.5 divided by 2 = 9.75" This is not exact by any means, but gives me a general idea of how deep I can expect to hit a target with a particular coil.

Way to many things go into the rotation to guess depth. I can tell you you ain't missing much with the 5x8. but you gain TONS of separation!

Thanks Bart, I forgot about this post lol. Glad to hear I won't be missing much, I don't really want to give up the smaller coil :D
