Great hunt, McNickle!! You needed that seated dime to finish it off.

Good hunting there Mc..!!!!!!!!!!.....congratulations

I for one appreciate the helpful details you diligently included in the post ...so important.

Coin program....gain 27....AND Auto stayed around 15-16.

Please...can similar posters include such information.

To me, an auto reading of 15-16 implies a 'normal' soil.

i.e. One which has minimal interfering ferrous contents, be they natural Fe minerals or man-made metals.

In such a situation, the E-Trac should be able to detect copper or silver coinage with a diameter of not less than 1 inch, to a depth of 12 inches.

That has been my personal experiences. One also assumes that such targets are 'sitting' in the ideal plain ....horizontal, or nearly so.

Your important quote of depth range for the clad, was also significant, in as much as they were apparently at a lesser depth.

There are several possible reasons for that, one of which is their overall conductivity and Fe identity factors, which theoretically should make them more difficult to detect as they descend deeper into the soil. Also, they by default, could be classed as more recent losses, comparatively speaking.

Mc...as you become more acquainted with your E-Trac, are you tending to hunt primarily by the audio, and using the screen data as a secondary factor in your decision to dig?

For my part, if the target doesn't fall immediately along the Fe 12 line, I dig that target principally based on the 4 tone Fe report, and a glance at the cursor's general positioning.

The pin-pointing response's WIDTH simply reinforces the likely hood of a potentially coin-like target.

Lately I've been evaluating the MLab 8 inch round coil......It's a delight to use, and generally requires no follow-up pinpoint procedure.

For all those 'deep-freaks'......if you ignore the power of the smaller search-head, then you will never know what you've left behind in the ground.

I won't waste time speculating the why and wherefores of the matter, but when I re-searched a specific area which I have done two weeks previously using the larger stock coil, I was reminded of the

realities of target sepparation....depth....AND the susceptibility of the operator to mentally be 'blind' to some signals.

I found 13 coins at depths of no more than 9 inches, using the 8 inch head. How could I have 'missed' them in the previous visit?

I can't honestly say.

I could make excuses which would be acceptable, but I cannot ignore the importance of the 'character' difference of the coils which contributed to that dilemma.

The punch line is, that depth and efficient detectability, is often wrongly understood or apportioned when related to search-head size.

DON'T BE AFRAID TO SPEND TIME ON A PRODUCTIVE SITE, USING A SMALLER SEARCH-HEAD.

....................

Apologies for the long ramblings, but thought they may be worth re-stating for those new to the hobby.

I would welcome anyone's alternative opinions on those comments,..................TheMarshall
