5 Rings: Was it Skill, Luck or ATX? You Decide

WaterWalker

Well-known member
Two weeks after the New England's deep freeze put me into hibernation it went north for 3 days. In its place came a blue sky, temperature hitting 49, melting snow, and 15mph winds

Well first it took a Hunter to take on those conditions. Now next the machine, was it because it's more sensitive or just able to hit deeper? Or both? And what do your friends hunt that area with? Now, I'm betting your a good guy, but I'm glad our hunting areas don't overlap! Know what I mean. Keep the posts coming.

Well......it's takes a little skill to make the ATX produce it's magic and some good persistence to increase the odds. Wonderful hunt in my books. Takes a bit of the bite out of the cold seeing finds like yours.

I only have 22 hours on the ATX, but I have to say, because I believe, it is more sensitive and quieter running thus "sees deeper" than my Infinium.

I know the Infinium, Whites PI, Minelab Excalibur and CTX3030 have all been all over the area within the last 7 months.

I have no area, I'll share anyplace with anyone. What I have found is not there, it is gone. However, that does not mean there is not more. Others have shared with me and I do the same. I do respect another detectorist's request not to reveil an area that he has taken me to.

Well, there are 5 ring hunts and then there are 5 big, fat gold ring hunts!!
That's one for the history books.

Fantastic! Great detail, I like hearing about how it runs, smooth and quiet definitely are huge factors. Your monthly finds will start to get too heavy to carry to club meeting without rolling luggage 😉!
Anyway 2 questions: what coil were you using?
How easy is it it clean out the ATX after saltwater use?

Very nice WW,

I think it's a combination of both coupled with an advantage of having an ATX, This is were the ATX will be a benefit for gold jewelry hunters especially in fresh water lakes/rivers with heavy mineralization.

Congrats

Stock coil (I can not afford the 20 or 8 inch coils). VERY HIGH maintenance for me...the cam locks are a bear.

I rinse in the salt water, rinse with fresh water at the car and squirt fresh water into every crevice from a water bottle with small drink hole.
I keep the shaft as extended as possible on the way home. At home I rinse with garden hose (temperature permitting). The end shaft piece under the arm rest must be moved forward to get the water into the entire shaft and then I let the shaft drain out while the coil is pointing to the sky. I then dry the shafts off, extend the shaft and put the detector in the basement to dry.
When dry, I use compressed air into all the cam lock crevices. When ever aiming water or air into the cam locks I twist them back and forth to help get all the silt out and keep them moving freely.

I just finished researching a garden sprayer to use instead of the water bottles. I remembered I had one, found it and its ready to go on the hunt.

I got a nice 6hp gas powered pressure washer at a garage sale the other day for $25. Maybe Garrett will start including one with each "Croc" they sell.

Just kidding of course, but they should be taking a serious look at the "maintainability" of the ATX. Mind you, Minelab seems to be having a worse problem with the CTX. Grit seems to eat away the light, but expensive and delicate carbon fiber shafts under the grip.

Thanks so much for the detail. I've had my fill of difficult cam locks and shafts. It's a head shaker that Garrett didn't design this PI with this long time issue addressed by a fresh design. I've gone to Plugger shafts & locks on a couple of my water units. No option to do so on that ATX. The promising performance will have me watching Garrett for a cam lock fix or a v.2 release. I've got the itch to try the ATX - getting down to the hard pack is impressive. I still use my old frozen PI Pro shaft when I don't need to use a break down travel type. Still, I always keep 2 gallons of fresh water in my vehicle for a first rinse until I can get home to my garden hose...the bath tub is handy too  My ATPro is used on the stock shaft only for turf hunting. That thing got silt in the cam locks so fast the first swim in a silty freshwater pond that I ordered up a handle mount for my 3 piece travel water shaft.
Glad I get to see your finds here.

Boy with a 6HP power washer I could also wash all the salt spray off may van waders and scoop. Of course I would need a power generator and a water source. I'm thinking a 55 gallon drum of fresh water. It looks like I might have to get a big box truck to carry all the ancillary equipment that I need to enjoy the hobby! Heck with that size truck I could stay "inside" while suiting up, have a port-a-potty, coffee machine, you name it and I could even put a hammock in it to take a nap. Oh, I can not forget the shower for the Crock / Armadillo / ATX (still thinking of a pet name for my detector). Maybe "Thin Lean Gold Machine", yes, no it is too lone - acronym TLGM? No, no one could decipher that. Great things to think of while the snow is falling and the sub-zero temps being around for the next 2-3 days.

When and If Garrett finds a fix for the cam issue, it is not going to be a inexpensive one. I don't know what I would do on a Caribbean vacation not having all the maintenance tools I would need. Might have to find a way to improvise.

Thanks for the info on the CTX problem, I have several friends that should know about it, I'll pass it on.

I have always had a travel shift for each of my water detectors and take spare parts on vacations. Glad I had a spare lower rod in Cancun after the bus driver closed the door on coil - maybe I did not get on the bus fast enough - anyway the lower shaft broke, and I had a spare and we all had a good laugh over it. What else to do?

Unfortunately, with the ATX I can not afford a spare shaft /with / coil - it is one part and sells for $530.00, So I will just have to keep the ATX clean. Glad I am retired and have the time to take care of the little darling.

New HOBBY: Waiting for summer... @%^&%$#@-----I am already tiring for the new hobby, bummer.
