Finally, some decent weather. Spent 6 hours in the lake. Got some loot, some rings and my first pocket watch in the water.

An "AC z DC" pocket watch, not working of course. It was half full of water.

Below are the rings after I cleaned them up a bit.

Fantastic Finds, John. I may have to start water hunting myself. The only thing is some of the old swimming holes I want to hunt, nobody will give me permission. Either that or I can't find the owners. Of course, shallow water is my speed starting out, since I don't want to take a chance dumping my 2500 if I fall in a hole or trip over a log or something.

I would love to do some water hunting but down here the state owns all waterways. A couple of years ago some a.....hole..found some bronze spear points on a riverbank and bragged about it on line. Now the laws says you can't pick up anything in the water or on the banks. Also, you may not use a metal detector on any state land, including parks, nature areas, etc. Kind of limits water hunting unless it's a [rovate lake so something. then theres' the issue of permission.... Oh well.
Happy Hunting

Good hunt John those ring could just as well have been gold !

I was test scanning some of my sister-in-laws gold rings today and some showed up at 2 to 2.5 and some showed up at 5 on the target scale. They were all gold. why the difference? I was scanning in all metal and coins and zero mode.

Three things will affect how gold will read on a scale:

1) SIZE & MASS - tiny thin gold rings can read in the foil section. Detectors are designed to get their best discrimination on coin sized objects.

2)SHAPE - anything circular tends to really hit hard on detectors when read by the coil.

3)COMPOSITION - gold jewellery is not usually found in a 24k mixture. It is melted and combined with other soft alloys like silver or copper. Depending on the amount of gold vs. other alloy had a direct effect on the readings. I have observed that higher the K, the lower it will read on the scale.
